Music while riding?
Let me preface by saying that I am a newer rider.
I was wondering if people listen to music (iPods and the like) while riding.
I would imagine that people don't blast death metal but i was wondering if you are doing a relaxing ride through the canyons would it be too dangerous to have an ear bud in one ear listening to some relaxing tunes.
If you answer the poll please comment on your answer.
Thanks!

Nope. Riding and staying alive in traffic is the only thing you need to be concentrating on.

For what purpose? If your fighting boredom while riding, there are other ways to occupy your brain that are more survival oriented. My feeling is I need every sense to ride safely, I'm not willing to give up any, much less one as important as hearing.

On longer trips or more slab than twisty, you bet. Even though commuting can be boring too, I wouldn't recommend it as much there. Trick is to get some decent in-ear buds so they cancel some noise. Otherwise, you're just cranking the volume louder than the already potentially damaging wind/bike noise. LOVE my ER-6i's.

Too dangerous. I don't need that distraction.

I like to consider a dry clutch and twin exhaust my favorite kind of music!

I did on a trip from Canberra to Brisbane with my Ipod, while its possibly irresponsible enough to ride 700miles in a day it did overcome some of the boredom.
That left me with industrial deafness, the ringing remained the next day. guess it had been up loud to overcome the wind & Ducati noise. So as Nathan said if your going to do it get good ear mounts to block the noise so you don't need the music loud to hear it.
I much prefer the sound of my fabulous Italian mount.

my boss does track days with headphones....
all I can say is that helps keep my position upwardly mobile ...ha ha
I always ride with ear plugs ,you can still here my baby sing but it minimises the damage.
If I were touring and was able keep the volume low enough as to not add to my hearing loss ,sure .
But on I sport bike going fast I would conceder it in the least a distraction and at worst dangerous .
