Best Ducati engine?
Okey..
So whats your preference?
2-valves or 4-valves? Or maybe something in between?

I should say it depends.
For road use where performance is not an issue I think that the simple maintenance and reliability of 2 valved engines can not be beaten for years... For race track use I also need a decent reliability but HP even more, so 4 is the number.

remember folks...Ducati generally across the whole product lines sells 2 valvers over 4 valvers at about 4.5 to 1 ratio roughly!

This is quite simple. The two valvers are the best Ducati product. The most usuable horsepower, the lowest cost of admission and ownership....the whole deal.
Those who feel that the Ducati experience is best enjoyed with approx. 120hp or more will undoutedly be dismissive of this point of view, and so be it. I appreciate their support for the general Ducati 4V product, without which we would all be poorer, but in the real world, 2V's are the cats ass.

while I love my aircooled 2 valve I lust after watercooled 4 valve.
as to "keep it simple stupid" then I guess one should not have a desmo, but a sidevalve BSA single
