The "Ducati Sound"

In the following article:

http://emagazine.credit-suisse.com/a...=72939&lang=EN

Federico Minoli answers the question:

Can you sum up the three key things that Ducati stands for?

With:

Desmodromic valve adjustment, the sound of the engines and the Italian design.

In this poll, what % makes-up the importance of the "Ducati Sound" to you? (100% means the ONLY thing you care about is the sound and nothing else).

Or if you think Ducati makes portable audio equipment instead of motorcycles.

My Bad

So....I did the guy thing and voted before I read the directions The very first thing I did to my ST3 was get rid of the stock cans and install the LV slip-ons....stock just doesn't SOUND like a Ducati.....it was 100% imperative.

But then I read the directions (Angie, you may insert a well-deserved snicker here ) -- and the proportions (for me) change to:

Performance 40%
Styling 30%
Sound 30%

Of course, I'm responding as an ST3 owner who's not (currently) doing much mechanical repair/mods......Next year I hope to be the proud owner of a superbike, and that might change my response a bit.

Generally, I sum up the uniqueness of a Ducati which is; Desmo valve train, trellis frame, dry clutch "music" (my apologies to you wet-clutch folks) , and oh yes, that distinct Ducati exhaust tone/sound.

A relative of mine who's "into" custom choppers stopped by the house a little while ago.

He wanted to see my Ducati (ST4s). He'd heard of Ducati, but has never seen one.

I took him to the garage, removed the bike cover and let him stare at it for a minute or two. Then I told him, "You gotta hear it."

I started the bike. His jaw dropped and he said, "I've never heard a bike sound like that before. That's incredible!"

The bike has the DP Performance (Termi) slip-ons and an open clutch cover.

I ride with earplugs all the time and wouldn't spend money on an exhaust I'll never hear. I like it quiet when I ride, especially on long rides. The Ducati sound did not factor in at all (0%).

Ducati sound.

The big thre for me...the overall package.

33.333% - The exhaust note and the over-run...simply exquisite.
33.333% - The styling.
33.333% - The handling / overall performance.

I to wear earplugs when I ride but this is more to cut out the wind noise at high speed. It also cuts out the noisy full floaters on the front! The exhaust note is the only thing I can hear and the only thing I really want to hear!
Marvellous!!!

The "L Twin" music was 99.9% why I bought a Ducati. The dry clutch and incredibly solid handling was just an added bonus.

I work between two warehouse but spend 90% of my time at one of them. When ever I ride to work I ride by the second warehouse just because they have a really fun right hander. I make the turn and then get on the throttle hard. So the other day a truck driver comes up to me and says "your bike sounds incredible. Every time you ride by here all the guys stop what their doing and just listen." So ya the sound is important to me.....
