San Francisco to Reno

The planning is down to the short strokes now. Departure is on June 18, 2010.

We have the route from Kalispell, MT, to San Francisco set down now, and we are solid on the route back from Reno, NV, to Kalispell, but we don't have any familiarity with California and we don't want to miss the good stuff in this section of the trip.

Anyone care to lay out a great day's ride route from San Francisco to Reno on google maps?

It really depends how far out of the way you are willing to go before I can make suggestions, but I do know some great routes.
Consider heading south a bit and taking Hwy 88 out of Jackson to Hwy 89 then around Lake Tahoe OR Hwy 88 to Hwy 4 over Monitor Pass and head up 395 to Reno. Another route would be Hwy 49 North out of Auburn to Hwy 89 to Hwy 70.

The only parameter is that we want to get to Reno in one day......

If you don't mind some extra time on your trip, head north over the Golden Gate first to sonoma county and take 121 east through napa becoming 128 at Lake Berryessa, east to davis, then take 113 north to 80 east, then straight on to Reno!

There may be something better from the foothills east of sac to Reno but I don't know those roads as well. 121/128 around berryessa is my regular sunday ride and I highly recommend it.

In fact, a vintage bike rally just went through there the other day. I saw a sweet 1977 Duc 900! And a cool old 350cc MV Agusta. Also, the "Tour de California" bike race goes this way every year. Lance Armstrong and all them.

Scenic and twisty! (until you hit Sac valley)

Let us know how it goes!

Sam Francisco was great..... if you are an Eskimo!

I ended up taking Hwy 4 out of Stockton and that took me to Ebett's Pass. Now there was a piece of riding!!

Great times!

I came upon a fellow wearing old TourMaster gear, and riding a 70's oil-head Beemer. I knew better than to overtake him going over that pass. We had a good laugh at Woodford's Station!!
