I'd still own one.
If they were available when I got my Sportster, I would have gone with the XR.

HDs will never compete with sport bikes. They weren't meant to. Who cares if it's old technology? Just means they got all the bugs worked out My Sporty has been rock solid and reliable for almost 25000 miles. Hell, the basic design of my Hyper's motor is technically old technology. But it sure is refined.

Nice write up. One of my Duc friens recently bought an HD for longer 2-up riding and said the brakes were a lot better than expected, and not just stop, but do well at it. It is a bigger beast than the XR you rode, so maybe they are actually putting even better brakes on the higher $$$ models.

oh, and since you wrote it, guess you can edit it? The city name is missing the 'u' (New Braunfels).

The XR uses a dual 4-pot Nissin setup whereas the touring behemoths use dual Brembo jobbies.
