Why should you have all the threads?
Got a call from a mote with a Busa last night, the local round of Offshore Power Boat Racing was being held today at Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast, we'd leave his place at 9 am ish.
We are in the middle of winter here.. so at 7.45 am it was about 11 deg c and I headed off to my work first. We are in the middle of the worst drought in 100 years so water restrictions mean buckets only, work is exempt because we operate a fleet of taxis so I went there to wash my bike first.
We left his place and headed out through Bunya then across Clear Mountain, down along Lake Sampsonvale towards Dayboro. I have a link road among the pineapple plantations which adds 15 km up a hill, down across a weir then back up again before arriving in Dayboro. All these roads are not often used by bikes or cars, I consider myself lucky that some friends grew up out here and knew they existed, so we can kinda fang along them.. Max speed limit is 100kmh but you can nearly average 80 for the link. Just slowing in the little villages as a courtesy.
Funny thing with the SS, if you have breakky and coffee before heading off, after only 30 mins of spirited riding shakes EVERYTHING to the lowest point in your body. Shut Up!!! I'm not far past 40... it CAN'T be THAT!!!!
We pulled up in Dayboro for 'convience' and I noticed a 740 dark.. These are kinda rare in these parts so I decided to go out on a limb here. " Hey Mate, You umm wouldn't go by the tag of Darness, woud you??" The look was almost priceless.. " Umm Yep.. who are you??" Pleasure to meet you out there (insert name here { I know but you haven't released it it} )
After a few nicities Darkness headed off. I had forgotten about my bladder at that stage so I would have to deal with it later. The Busa and I were travelling a little quicker than the posted amount and trying to carry some corner speed, Darkness was riding alone whis is great for him. Some Yamaha R's had gone off ahead of us so we banked they would attract attention away from us. We'd been up over Mt Mee ( stop Laughing.. we have some odd names here) last weekend when it was wet and slippery so today was bone dry ... and.... loving it. Pulled into D'Agular just after the R bikes so we were pleased. From D'Argular to Woodford is copper hunting ground so it's an easy ride then up to Maleny via Qlds Phillip Island, thought a rainforest with beautiful 50 & 60 kmh posted corners (double plus 10 is reported but I can only just double) Did I mention carrying corner speed?
From Malaney I buggered up with choice of directions so we cruised the old high way to Mooloolaba to watch the boats.. These are awesome pieces of kit, V 12 2 stroke diesels, plus some with twin 300 hp outboards. Unfortunately it was pretty boring to watch but lying in the sun amongst a numer of other bikers was good. We watched them load up onto huge trailers then we headed for home. Back down the highway to Landsborough then in to the OLD OLD Gympie road, another road rarely used except by locals so one can be 'spirited'. Over the Peachester range but unable to get past a ute because of the twisty road. Eventually got past and bck into the groove. I was leading when a 4wd came out from the 'Phillip Island' road just ahead of me. Where he joined we have 2 lanes to allow passing but he sat square in the middle I couldn't decide which side to pass him on, he wasn't even sure which lane he wanted so we were stuck behind him down the range for a couple of Km. I don't know if I was upset more at him for sitting in the middle and kind of weaving between the lanes, or angry at myself for not just deciding to blast past.. I know enough not to trust them to remain where they are.
Back into Woodford and over Mt Mee again for the trip home.. It was about 4.30 by then and getting onto dusk here so I felt a little uncomfortable, tired and not the best for reading the road. Still had a ball in all..
Covered about 420 km today, 70 ish on flat top, the rest in the mountains. Only saw ONE copper, in the usual spot, just out of Dayboro on the trip home.
Winter, where we live is terrific, today got to a max of 21c not a cloud in the sky. It's just the brisk mornings that are 'character building' but neckwarmers and thermals fix everything.
Darkness, It was a pleasure to meet you today.
Mal
Ps. we don't usually travel that quick.
