The Big Loop 2017

This year I have 6 weeks of vacation for the first time, that gives me enough to do something I've always wanted to do... go on a really long ride. So, I'm going to take a ride around North America... 12,000 to 14,000 miles in the US and Canada covering South as far as San Diego to Northern Canada (not sure about an Arctic Circle run... 14k if yes, 12k if no), and West from Prince Rupert BC (tentative) to St. Johns Newfoundland in the East.

The trip from NY to San Diego will be with my cousin (13 Multi S). He's heading straight back from SD since he only has 3 weeks vacation. From SD through Canada will be solo.

I'm down to 2 months to go so we're starting to take a serious look at route planning and equipment lists... thought I'd record some of the prep work. Here's our semi-firm plan for the first leg (NY to CA):

5/13 - NY to Stuart VA (Transit stage... we ride this all the time so we're just going to knock it out)
5/14 - Stuart to Chattanooga (taking any interesting roads down the Blue Ridge & Smokey Mtns)
5/15 - Ride around Chattanooga (TotD and others)
5/16 - TN to Fayetteville AR (bunch of relatives in the area)
5/17 - Party with Family (probably no riding)
5/18 - AR to Colorado Springs (Transit stage... blast across the flatlands as quickly as possible)
5/19 - Ride around Southern Colorado (End up somewhere near the UT/CO/NM/AZ 4 corners)
5/20 - CO to Anza Borrego CA (a ton of national parks/monuments/badlands on the way)

That's the first week (~4500 miles) and gets us to our Aunt's in CA. After that it's 4 or 5 days of hanging out then Greg heads East and I head North... route still under construction.

If you find yourself coming through Northern California, Sacramento in particular, and need a place to stay, I have a spare bedroom for you and a garage for the bike. Would just need to know the approximate dates as I travel a lot.

This is what I'm thinking about for the Sacramento area:Middle of CA

(there's a loop out to Mariposa in the route because google maps doesn't let you ignore road closures and there's a winter road closure on the route)

but that's really based on just a quick review of interesting looking roads in the area (subject to/almost guaranteed to change).

That day will be May 31 or maybe June 1.

Fresh front pads today, and received my Aerostitch compact compressor and Airhawk seat pad. Also received my 3DR Solo quadcoptor, have to figure out if I'm going to be able to bring it (it's big).

Too bad you can't pull through Topaz Lake a few weeks later, that is when/where we are having the West Coast Meetup.

No! You can't have him. He's ours. We're forcing him to come to the ECM. Bwah ha ha!
