just around the corner to get there, huh..?
I did that going to Europe last year (rented a GS)... was so much fun I'd like to do it every year. Would cost a fair amount to put that many miles on a rental tho. (1500 miles cost me a around $800 USD)

I'm flying solo for most of the trip (~9k of the 14k miles)... meeting up with forum members would be pretty awesome. I don't get lonely riding by myself but occasional company (and maybe someone who knows local fun roads) I'd always be up for. I was planning to put up my route as it firms up specifically for that reason.

but that's really based on just a quick review of interesting looking roads in the area (subject to/almost guaranteed to change).

That day will be May 31 or maybe June 1.

A couple of things here...that route will keep you away from the Sacramento area and I won't be home those dates. The other thing is the 3DR Solo drone. I bought one in September and have had a lot of problems with it. I've returned the gimbal twice and the whole system twice, all due to connectivity issues: not being able to view the image to my phone/ipad and the controller failing completely. 3DR has been very good about replacing these things but they take a good couple of weeks to process. Be sure to fly it to learn how it functions, which is actually very good, and that it works correctly. As it turns out, FedEx just dropped off my replacement system this morning.

Yea I think 3dr lost their ass on the unit... seems like their QC is pretty variable and LOTS of people have had the same sort of issues you did. The unit is arduino based so I figured worst case (when they completely stop support) I could do that sort of debug myself (and most of the components are replaceable).

Knock on wood but mine has been good so far. In fact I just ordered 2 more for a project at work.

Glad for you my man, that's quite an epic trip.

I've included my favorite way of getting from LA to SF area w/o hitting freeways. It's estimated hwy Big Sur area will be closed until next yr. Pay special attention to the hwy 229 section, I zoomed into it on the map. The locals here call it Rossi's driveway, good luck keeping the front end down. The rest is awesome too! In nor cal, hwy 36 is infamous and cannot be missed but its pure East to West. Another great and I mean GREAT option is hwy 96. Going straight up hwy 1 is OK, but one tires of ocean views after a while. Try to incorporate crisscrossing mountain ranges on the way up and watch out for cops on the hwy1.

Hwy 1 in Oregon btwn port orford and florence is meh... ur far from the ocean, the road is straight,,, head inland.

I think ur wasting space bringing motor oil and a bike cover, ppl generally steal yamazuki's, parking right by the front door of the hotel is best. The coast can be cold, wet and fogged in until 11am, so as a general rule try to wake up inland (warm and dry) and by noonish (when temps get HOT) make ur way to the coast and enjoy the perfect weather.

Hit me up if u like, if you pass thru on a weekend I could ride a ways with you too.

Good luck!

I'll let you know. We're now down to T-1 week, mounted the new front sneaker today... have all the gear collected and I'm now trying to figure out how the heck to fit it all on the bike (going to be dropping a few things off the list I'm guessing. I'll have a laptop with me so will let you know where we're at. I think we've got 3 now for the trip out (one of my brothers got laid off so he said "f-it, I'm going")... but I believe I'll still be solo from San Diego up the coast and through Canada.

Work has been insane... I'm now planning to take a periodic break from vacation to check in and keep things somewhat under control there. The whole thing has snuck up on me since I've been traveling so much for work lately... but starting to get excited.

The time is upon us... and as is typical... the Ducati gods are fickle. My cousin's Multi 13S has developed a whine when hot that started after his 15k service... likely a tight belt. Soo... we're leaving a day early and our first stop is at the Dealer in State College so they can take a look.

Out the door:

Packing actually went better than expected... using my very compact hiking camping gear I was able to get all that (tent, bag, towels, pillow, misc...) into one dry bag. Cold/Hot weather gear in a second, Clothes in a pannier, hardware in the other, PC and camera gear in the top case. Size isn't too bad but it's definitely heavy. Bike feels like a tank.

Then half a day of work...

In a few minutes I'll be done for the day and start heading toward State College... then we're officially on the road. Reset Trip1... will be curious to see if I'll be able to get close to the planned distance (12,000 - 14,000 miles depending on selected options).

Heres a gopro still from Saturday. West of Blacksburg VA (near the WV border)

We had rain Friday night and a bit Sat morning but by 11 it had cleared up and most of WV and VA to Stuart was perfect weather. The climb to the VA border was a great road... I'll try to post the video when I get better internet.
