Spring Break in Lewiston IV
We leave tomorrow morning. Friday night will be spent in John Day, Oregon. We will ride up Hells Canyon Saturday on our way to Lewiston, Idaho. I'll post up a report and photos Tuesday.

Have a good trip, I look forward to the photos. Don't forget to keep your camera accessible so you don't have to think twice about snapping a good section of road or scenery. If you are riding up the east side of the canyon a 50 mile detour to Elk City might offer some fantastic riding/scenery this time of year. I assume the snow is gone from the valley but...

Four days, three states, 1465 miles, 14 riders, and lots of fun. We evolved into two groups: fast and not so fast, which really helped to make the ride manageable for me and enjoyable for all.
The first day was Seattle to John Day, Oregon over roads I have ridden in the past. The second day was John Day to Lewiston, Idaho via Hells Canyon. I got to travel several new roads, the best of which was Oregon Hwy. 245 over Dooley Mtn. The motorcycle map says 188 curves, updated from the previous count of 175. We are still trying to figure that one out.
Posted below are some photos I took at one of the hairpins on Oregon 245. The fast group waited between two hairpins for us slower riders, who in turn waited for them at the top of the second hairpin. You can see Mark Turbo and his red ST4s with the topbox on the far left of the assembled fast group in the first photo. That is my red ST4s at the head of the lineup of the slow group in the second photo.
We were unable to fill up with gas at our usual spot near Oxbow Dam in Hells Canyon ( a weird story in itself), so some riders decided to forgo the side trip north to Hells Canyon Dam over the twisty power company road along the canyon side and chose to ride ahead to Lewiston.
Sunday we did a leisurely ride down the Snake River Canyon out of Lewiston and around the Palouse in the Moscow-Pullman area. Monday we returned home.
It was a great trip despite one member having a flat tire in Lewiston for the second consecutive year. I hope Mark Turbo will add to this thread and post some of the good photos he took.

The following are four photos I took at Hells Canyon Dam and one photo of us lined up atop the famous Spiral Highway above Lewiston the following day.

Thanks for the pics and report Bill, that's a good riding area for sure!
Was the white/blue BMW K1200S? with your group? if so I'd like to ask him/her about that bike.

Yes he was. His other bike is a 1098. Send me your e-mail address via PM and I will forward it to him. You're not thinking about dumping the ST3 are you?

My ST will mostly likely always be mine as it's depreciated too much to sell, thanks to my steep learning curves!
My 82 y/o riding friend planted the BMW seed (he may sell off one of his) unfortunately it's not the K1200S. Just kicking bike ideas around even though the ST3 does it for me. Day dreaming in short.
I'll pm you and I just might make Torrey after all!

I responded to your PM and hope to see you in Torrey. The learning curves are supposed to be sharp, not steep.

Here are some more pix from the weekend ride to Hells Canyon. This was my first official Spring Break ride with the group. I had met with the group in Lewiston last year, on my way back from Baja via Ut.
The group is cooling off at the base of Hells Canyon Dam:
Here's Mark Turbo enjoying some of the many twisty bits we hit over the weekend!
The run up to the dam was pretty spectacular as evidenced by the following pix:
The topography and landscape in eastern Washington is so strange compared to the Seattle area. I can only imagine this area awash with a huge river teeming with dinosaurs millions of years ago:
All in all a great 3 day weekend for me. 1275 miles and no tickets!!!

and now the video
Randy the X Man made a video of a portion of the ride. It is worth watching for those of you who have never ridden the area. You can see why Mark Turbo has put 60,000 miles on his 02-ST4s . How can you not like roads where you see more motorcycles than autos?
Randy's lean angles get very serious for a Honda VTX 1800. We keep telling him he needs to graduate to a sport tourer like a Honda ST1300. I suggest reading Randy's trip report before viewing the footage.
