Lunch in Conway
Today I decided to get in a morning ride and lunch before having to return home for my afternoon workout at the gym with my son. I took my standard flight path through the Lower Skagitt Valley to La Connor, intending to have lunch on the back deck of the La Conner Pub overlooking the waterway.
Although the tulips have all been cut from the fields, La Conner was still full of tourists, so I retraced my route and stopped off at a known biker tav, the Conway Pub. It is located on the ground floor of the American Legion Hall on Conway's main street (all two blocks of it) off Fir Island Rd. near its junction with I-5. I parked beside an HD Electra Glide in front of the former First National Bank of Conway, which is now a private residence.
I sat at a table with a couple who were riding together. Each had his/her own Harley, which they parked across the street from the tavern. Their bikes were later joined by a few more Harleys. The waitress said the place is packed with motorcycles on a sunny weekend.
After lunch I went back to my bike and took a few photos of the town. The Electra GLide was gone, but in its place was an immaculate Goldwing 1100. Some older guys who claimed to be long time residents told me a little about what businesses the old buildings once housed many years ago.
My GPS was displaying below sea level readings throughout the area. The old guys said that is not suprising and pointed to the levees along the river. One guy said that he had once paddled a boat down the main street during a flood.
The ride home was uneventful, but the Friday afternoon northbound traffic on I-5 was already starting to back up south of Everett. All the more reason to call it a day and hit the gym with my son.
