A festive 1901 Labor Day celebration in the thriving, mining community of Eldora...
Well, with the mines less thriving, so is the now sem-ghost town of Eldora. What a contrast...
About 60 years ago, the D&SP station house in Como was in a state of decay after the tracks over nearby Boreas Pass were pulled up.
Things are coming around a bit, but things are also still a little slow and sleepy in Como (named by Italian miners who thought the area reminded them of home)...
Nevadaville, about a mile SW above Central City, boasted in 1865 a population of 4,000... one of the most populous towns in the state at the time. The first big gold strike was nearby...
The population today now hovers between 5 and 10...

Steve: Can you post on this thread a link to that "Then and Now" video you made while you were out for a leisurely cruise on your Harley? With my interest in Colorado narrow gauge railroads, I love this thread.

Bill, Quite the memory there! That thread was six years ago this upcoming summer. You know, the video just shows the ride on the old train bed alongside the tumbling river, but there aren't then/now comparisons... http://www.farson.com/video/flriver.wmv Now this one a couple years later on the BMW does... http://www.farson.com/video/alongriverb.wmv
But you may recall some of these images from that 2006 tale, in addition to the ones already in this thread...
And hey, if you 3D classes (red/cyan) and can view the vid in 720p, here's a short clip on the same old train bed to the conflluence of the North and Middle Forks of the South Platte where the historic, and still standing hotel is. A 1:41 recording on the Multistrada...

I believe your "Then and Now" video that I am thinking of is a third video not posted above. I'll do some research through the Ducati.MS archives and see if I can find it, assuming it has not been lost in the first or second version of Ducati.MS which we can no longer access.

Bill, I'll scratch me noggin trying to think of the vid you are recalling. Hey, it'll be fun going through the older recordings.
A well known curve on the Million Dollar Highway in the San Juan Mountains, 1924...
Found the image above, after capturing the image below...

Bill, Have scanned through the entire library here, the only other one it could be is this one. There are no other then/now vids.
A few more...
Russell Gulch is another boom and bust town. During boom times over a thousand lived here...
Today during bust times it is hardly populated with people, but it is populated with old and empty and small miners cabins...
If you hopped off the train in St. Elmo in 1878, this is how you might have been greeted...
If you rode in today...
And after walking through town and looking back in 1880...
And doing the same today...

Very cool thread! Thank you sfarson! I think I may use your idea as an inspiration to take old/new photos here in Oklahoma.
