A most-memorable (and wet!) 4th of July
So, the highlight of my 4th of July weekend, besides boogie-boarding at Huntington Beach, was supposed to be Speedway Bikes in Victorville.
Left my place around 4:30, and it was a "warm" 102-F. (When you
really appreciate Ducati's under-tail exhaust! The burn marks should disappear in a few weeks, hah-hah!) Races started on-time at 5:30,
but by 6:00 it started sprinkling, and by 6:20 we had a true "gully-washer".
Yes, the racing was cancelled for the night, a little less than half-way through the program. I was one of only three motorcyclists who actually rode to the races. Was really glad I fashioned a "puck" out of a soda can when I parked in the dirt. By 6:30 when we evacuated the track, there was already severe flooding in the parking lot. I had to ford no less than THREE STREAMS at least 1-ft. deep on my 749 (with an open-clutch cover). I patiently watched what the cagers were doing, found the highest spots,
and pressed-on regardless. Of course, then back on the freeway, I couldn't see and there was still severe rain and wind. Fortunately, 5 miles out of Victorville it cleared-up and the rest of the trip was uneventful. Just goes to show you: always be prepared! And, hey, guess I'm a better bad-weather rider than I thought! Finally, Ducatis ARE realiable, all-terrain bikes. Who needs a Beemer to handle white-water?, hah-hah!
