Tracey and I finally got on the road to "The Breaks" known as the Grand Canyon of the South and an Interstate Park between Kentucky and Virginia. It was nice and sunny when we left home and we were hoping it would rain at home. But, as we near our destination that afternoon the last clouds darkened and it started to sprinkle, I actually pulled under a gas station awning and we put on our frog togs. The last ten miles that day consisted of a gully washing, blinding rain storm with hail on mountain roads that you could actually see your arse end as you went around them, or should I say, could have seen our arse end had we not been blinded by rain. We made it upright and they had a room at the lodge. Here's the Canyon as we saw it when we arrived. Of course I waited till the rain had stopped to take these.
From the Lodge Restaurant deck,
Don't waste your time eating at the restaurant unless you like to be reminded of the food you had in high school cafeteria days. Ride back out to the park entrance take a left and head towards the Kentucky line, about two miles down the road is the "Southern" hickory smoke barbeque joint. Good BBQ I might add and this from a fellow that said no good BBQ can be found west of I95 in North Carolina. I must have been terrible hungry or something.
The next day we started back home,
this is the deepest canyon east of the Mississippi so that's the reason for the Grand Canyon of the South naming.
of course on the trip home I decided on a different route, to end up coming back into our home range on Virginia highway 58. I didn't stop and get some pictures I'd have liked because .......guess what......it was raining. As we came down 63 heading towards Abingdon VA we past through one place that was really depressing, I'm sure y'all have seen the Coal Town pictures, this was the poster child of Coal Towns. Row shacks along the railroad tracks. Really depressing to see it. We continued on and it rained and the stretch of 58 from Damascus to Mouth of Wilson is 44 miles and 9,486 15mph curves in the rain. It sucked, I'm tired of twisties.
