August Trip to Niagra Falls.

Hey guys, just wanted to let you in on our trip to Niagara Falls this upcoming August. Below are the dates and where we will be, I will not post travel days because it will be difficult to meet-up with anyone on those days. So anyways, if you are local to the area where we will be staying shoot me a PM and maybe we can meet-up.

August 13 & 14 : Niagara Falls/Toronto
August 16 : New York City/Brooklyn
August 18 : Washington D.C.

On August 19 we will should be staying somewhere, half-way down the Blue Ridge Parkway, so if anyone knows of a nice, cheap place, let me know. Also I will be posting our ride report in this thread when eventually the trip begins.

All about the food, man...

Yes, of course you'll want to visit Anchor Bar, home of "wings" (they don't call them "Buffalo Wings", and if you don't want to look like a tourist, just call them "The Falls"). But for "something...completely different", visit Schwabel's for a beef-on-weck (roast beef mit horseradish on a salty carraway seed roll).
And if you have service issues or just want to buy a t-shirt, you'll need to go about 45 mi. SE of Buffalo to Holland, NY to visit Williamsville Ducati. Great little town just outside of E. Aurora. And, they have a stock car track in the middle of a grove of trees on the hill over-looking town. Great place to see a circle-track race! Enjoy your trip, and say "Hi!" to my buddy Jerry in DePew!

So the bike is almost ready except for an oil change tonight. Departure is set for Thursday at 2pm. We are almost on the road and I am super excited.

Thanks guys. It is currently 12:02am, and all I have left to do is finish packing, and lube the chain on the bike. Being gone for 10 days is not too bad on packing, the problem is that we will be staying with her friends in the different cities, and they have dinners, and nights planned for us. That means that I need to be packing a bit extra clothes and dressy ones at that. Anyhow, I am also posting on facebook via my Blackberry, so if you guys want to follow along there as well, you are more than welcome to.

facebook

I will try and post up every night on here, so stay tuned.

-Alex

p.s. Angela owns the right pannier on the bike... I might be dragging my right side peg the whole trip.

Bike is loaded and ready. Angela is finishing her final test. I'm finishing last minute stuff at work. Train leaves at 4pm. The trip has somewhat started.

Thursday Aug. 11, and Friday Aug. 12.

Thursday, August 11, 2011:

Today we officially started our road trip. I picked Angela up from her apartment and we loaded the bike with everything. It feels like a real pig with two people and all the gear, but she handles the extra weight like a champ! We were a few minutes late to the Amtrak AutoTrain, but thankfully they loaded us up anyways. The temperature was about 97F in the afternoon, so we were baking while getting the bike sorted.

We boarded the train drenched in sweat and looking like a real pair of vagabonds who just rode 35 minutes in 98F heat with full gear.

The train was great, food was alright, and although we didn't get much sleep the chairs were spacious, and comfortable. We departed at around 4:00pm and arrived at 10:00am in Lorton, Virginia.

Friday, August 12, 2011:

950 miles down and another 450 to go. We got a late start, around 12:00pm, after unloading the train and get the bike packed. The weather was great, not a cloud in the sky and a cool 84F.

Although we didn't get many pictures of the ride because we were rushed, the views were spectacular! Somewhere in Maryland we encountered a traffic jam where were rolled along for about an hour. Thankfully we started the traffic at the top of the "mountain" so I just put the bike in neutral, turned it off, and we rolled for about 2 miles downhill, efficiency at its best!

After the traffic and various miles(200 or so) of superslab we finally reached the point of our trip where the backroads started. Here is Angela showing her excitement that we were off the highway.

And my excitement!

So we cruised along....

And shortly after Ridgeway, PA, I get pulled over doing 65mph in a 45mph. The officer talks to us for a bit...
Officer: Do you know why I stopped you?
Me: No sir, I do not.
Officer: You were doing 65 in a 45.
Me: Really?! I'm so sorry! When did it change from 55 to 45?
Officer: You remember the underpass, wayyy back there about 6 miles?
Me: Yes sir! Kinda.
Officer: That's where.
Me: Oh, I'm so sorry officer, I didn't realize.
*Topic changes....
Officer: You guys rode all the way from Florida?
Me: No Sir, we took the train to Lorton, VA, but we are riding all the way back.
Officer: Am I the first officer to pull you over?
Me: Yes, sir.
Officer: Well, I don't want to be "that" guy. So you guys just be safe, and be careful on US219 because the deer come out around this time.
Me & Ang: Thank you officer!!!

Whoo! Close call! So from now on I stick to the speed limit, even if my bike is 8% off.

Anyhow, we pass through more of the PA countryside, and then into NY, where we cross at the Peace River Bridge.

Another 20 minutes on the highway and we make it to Niagara Falls... Late! But safely!

Ang and I are absolutely knackered, so we get our clothes washed, I get everything off the bike and we call it a night...Snoring by 10:30pm.

Saturday, August 13, 2011:

So today was our first full day in Niagara and we decided to cram as much into it as possible. I will try and stay brief and just explain the exciting parts.

First off we walked down and did the "World Famous" Maid of the Mist.

After the Maid of the Mist, we did Journey Behind the Falls.

After getting pretty wet, we went back to our quaint B&B...

We got ready and drove over to our wine tour and tasting.

Continued....

...Continued

Angela became a bit intoxicated after drinking a whole bottle...

I on the other hand kept my composure...

Before leaving Angela took an excellent picture of Duckie in her natural environment.

So after we finished with the wine tasting, tour, and purchases. We headed over to the botanical gardens and butterfly conservatory. The wolf looking butterflies loved Ang and I.

...To Be Continued... Angela wants to do stuff today.
