Highwood Pass - Candian Rockies Ride

Its great to have this kind of scenery in your backyard.

VoyagerDude (pics courtesy of him) and I went on what we consider a fairly normal route which is to ride through the Highwood Pass and have lunch stop in Canmore Alberta.

Here are some pics from our Saturday September 30th jaunt through the mountains.

Some details on Highwood Pass:

The highest drivable pass in Canada is Highwood Pass (7239 ft.) This road is Highway 40 in Kananaskis County, Alberta (southwest of Calgary).

On the 2000 official Alberta Highway Map it is shown as paved and the altitude of the summit of Highwood Pass is labelled as being 2205m, which almost exactly agrees with 7239ft. The pass is open from June 15 to December 1st yearly.

My 749 Dark and Gabor's 749S at a rest stop.

The mountains and skyline make for some very nice panoramic type of shots

The highwood pass is not technical by any stretch of the imagination but the long sweepers all through the pass are great fun. You must be on your toes though as there is all sorts of wildlife (it IS a park pass) can be on the road at any given time of the year.

On the way back to Calgary after lunch in Canmore, we stopped at Ghost Lake for another couple of pictures.

It was a great day for riding and if anyone is up around Calgary/Banff and wants to go for a good ride, shoot me a PM. I'd be happy to show some of the local routes.

Cheers!

Thumbs up Very nice.

Thanks for sharing your ride, and great pictures. It looks cold, was it?

It wasn't cold at all. 25 Celcius in the valley and 16 Celcius around the summit. It was REALLY windy though but that's to be expected this time of the year.
