Hi, not new to bikes but new to Ducati !! Just bought a crash damaged 2001 748r. It has essentially cosmetic damage which I intend to repair with a new fairing from Ebay from China and second user parts too. Thats all straight forwards....
Heres the slightly trickier bit, both the left hand corner of the crankcase sump and the alternator cover have been cracked. The crankcase seems as if to save a total strip down a welding repair is worth trying which I will attempt very shortly. I think the engine stalled before loss of oil and otherwise seems free and undameged. One question on this, is it worth leeching some CO2 into the crank case to avoid oil residue igniting? or in a sealed crankcase is there so little oxygen its not an issue?

The next question is I have seen several alternator covers on Ebay but they are listed sp2 or sp4 some with Ducati written on and some not. one has a two wire alternator fitted, my alternator is not damaged but is a three wire, so simply are these cases interchangable?

I am itching to get the Duke on the road and would be grateful for all opinions !!!
Thank you in anticipation of your help
