conversion to left side shift on Bevel

Anyone know of or done a conversion to left side shifting on
the early 750 GT?

I'm going to work it out and if someone has already broken ground
it would be nice.

I dont know if your frame would allow it as the 860/900's have got the cut out on the frame tap for the cross over linkage rod you would also need to part there of grind your clutch side cover so that the rod can go past the cover , I have a round case side cover that has the notch already ground out , I was going to get it filled but havent bothered with it , so if you need a side cover that has been moded I can help , Ian Gownenlock does have some 860 cross over linkages

Cheers Marty

hey Marty, I've seen a conversion on a Sport that ran the cross over through
the hollow of the swing arm I think. Supposedly had needle bearings in there to
make it operate smoothly. However, it may be better to take the 860 cross linkages and mod them to work on the GT. It's a shame there isn't an 860 nearby I could get the idea straight in my mind.

I may need that cover so don't file it out yet.

Thanks for the info.

Rob,
Changing to the left side will probably give you the shift pattern you are familiar with, but you will loose some precision. The 1 up and 4 down on the right side becomes easy after a short time and is also quite good when reaching for a higher gear when cranked over.

Ian,
I hear you and had I started out with this as a young fellow I'd keep it and convert the newer bikes to right hand. I've just decided that it might be best for me to keep have all my bikes shift on the same side. Now I'm not sure I can do that with the Velocette without to much commotion. I do like the
going up part when on the throttle and cranked over a bit.

Robert,
Why not switch the ST over to the right?

IMHO, its not so much the left shift lever verus right shift lever issue. It is that the ST has a left shift lever AND std shifting (while the GT has a right shift lever AND GP shifting). One too many variables going from ST to GT. If you mod the ST to GP shifting so that you only have to deal with one variable going from one bike to the other, it is manageable.

Right side correct shifting

I changed my 900 1978 bevel to corrected right hand shifting, because all my Ducati singles shift that way, my 500 Matchless old Benelli's ect.All you need to change to right shift is take the selector out of a wide case 250,350,or450 single, switch the selector shaft in about 30 min. If you want to change over
to left hand shift, I saved all that linkage pieces and would sell them to you. But then you have to build a right hand rear brake pedal. sounds like a lot of work to me.

Hmmmmm, I switched my '75 to RH shift to get rid of all the extra linkage, made a great difference. Each to their own though, good luck.

now that is an idea I'd not considered. May have to explore that option.
