Smile 1960ish Ducati 48cm

My Dad was a great motorcycle rider/mechanic till he had a nasty accident on a Ducati involving a dog on a gravel road . Needless to say he hung up his helmet and mine! He had purchased a bike shortly before having his accident but never got around to fixing it up. It sat in a barn for 35 years till I drug it out 5 years ago. I sent pics to Ducati in Bologna and the Museum Curator thinks its a 98 Cavallino. I cannot find any info online to back up this information. It has the badge on the front and most information is legible I just can't find anything that matches the badge. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Its in climate controlled storage and I don't have any pics of the whole bike. Its rough, but I think its restoreable, heck the tires still hold air.

This is what the badge says:

Tipo Del Veicolo ???? not legible till its pulled into the sunlight
Anno Di Costruz. 196
No Motore 305213
No Telaio 305213
PESO kg 50
Carico Utile ?? KG 80
Cilindr.cm 48

If anyone knows what it is or where I can get parts (that is IF I can get them) please contact me.

HI Gina
I think "Tipo Del Veicolo" translates as 'Type of Vehicle' - which doesn't help us much...
I have a mid-60's Ducati SL/1 and the only info on the steering head is the frame number, but not on a badge, straight into the steering head.

Could you post a photo of the bike? What do the tank badges say and what does it say on the engine?

regards
Thomas

Gina,
The info you provide is a bit confusing. The engine size appears to be 48cc but the weight of 80Kg and the year of manufacture is in the 1960s. The last two things indicate a 98 Bronco or Cavallino which Berliner started importing back then. The 48cc would be much earlier and most likely to be an import. The 48 has bicycle size 24" wheels whilst the 98 can be 16" or 17" wheels depending on what model 98 it is. You should do as Thomas says and post a few photos. Regards,
Ian

Yeah, I think we need some photos of this bike.
I'm pretty sure Berliner retagged the bikes they imported. If true, that means this bike was most likely brought in by it's owner. Also I'm pretty sure Ducati built both 2T and 4T engines in a 50cc range. Gina, can you tell which it is?
I don't have any reference materials with me right now so I can't confirm anything.
