Old Duck

Hi guys.
I'm new to the vintage section, but hope to become part of the group here.
Hoping for some help in figuring out what I have here....

She's an old barn find, has good compression, and a box of stuff including the carb and a ton of other bits from this bike and a 350.
Just trying to figure out the year and model.
Thanks for any help or information.

-karl

She's a 450 scrambler. The frame and swing-arm are 450 items as well - the extra bracing on each show that. The upturn on the rear of the frame and upper shock mount location show that its a scrambler frame. It's a springer head not a desmo.

Seat and rear shocks are not originals. Missing some other items such as the lights and fork gaiters. Tank looks right.

On the engine cases, in front of the cylinder will be DM450 then a number on the other side. That number would help to date it.

Thank you very much for the information.
Looking forward to a fun project with this bike.
Definitely a lot of work to do, but I enjoy that.
Thanks again.

There are going to be a lot of noob questions coming from me in the near future as this build comes together, I will apologize now.

Heres the first one....

How do I go about getting information about it with this case number?
Thanks for any help.

See some number data here. Dating from Ducati engine numbers is not totally reliable as you will see by looking at the data. From the data your number appears consistant with a 1970 to 1971 build.

those are S&W shocks on the rear - a common aftermarket replacement back in the day.
They're probably not as good as the originals but everybody bought 'em.
a lot of guys in the US stripped the SCR and used it as a dirtbike/motocrosser (rather than a dualsport)

The dual levers on the left handlebar looks to be original...

Thanks for the info Flyn. I was told by the gentleman who this bike came from, that it was used as a flat track racer at some point.

You should have seen the pile of stuff the old guy had.
I mean literally a pile, we had to dig through it to get at anything, frames, motors, bicycles, furniture, sinks, all crammed in this little shed that was ready to fall down.
It was an interesting experience.
Not a Desmo in the bunch but still some really cool stuff.
Here's what I came out of it with....

Some narrow case 250's and a wide case 350.

Another narrow case 250 with cylinder and head. I have all the transmission parts and engine covers in a box.

Yet another narrow case 250 complete.
This motor was frozen and as I dug into it found that it was just a seized piston.
The lower end moves very nicely.
I also have the original (I think) Dellorto SS1 for it in nice shape.
This one will be the next project after I'm done (crosses fingers) with the 450.

Random frame and forks. Not sure what this is from yet.

A bit overwhelmed with all of this stuff right now, trying to remember what is what and what is where.
But damn is it fun, and I am learning a TON about these old birds.
It's really nice to have all of the donor parts to dissect and pull from.
In the end I am hoping to have two running bikes.

These old motors are beautiful and sometimes feel almost like jewelry.
Lot's of work to do, but luckily I am in no hurry.
I'll keep posting as the work progresses and I am sure I'll have a lot of questions along the way.

-Cheers
