vintage fastners for a resto,

what do you guys use? i just thought about this now. for my cadet i used grade 8 metric bolts from my local hardware store, they have numbers stamped ontop and some have dashes.

would this affect value of the bike? i just thought about it today, because when people are putting bikes together with parts from everywhere odds are good they dont have original bolts.

Dreyeice,
I try to use only the originals. I wire brush them back to a clean surface on the bench grinder and then get them re-zinced. Also, it is worth checking the threads with a thread file to give yourself an easy time on reassembly. If you are doing something rare and you don't have the correct bolts then you start really looking and that is another story!
Also, look out for locknuts as the earlier ones are quite different. The trouble that you are prepared to go to should be goverened by the significance of the bike you are restoring. There is quite a bit to this area of restoration.
Best of luck.
Ian

Use period bolts!

I just participated in a show in California with my 250 Mach1 and was dinged points for not having all period bolts. I your going for show quality put the original bolts from that period on the bike. Follow previous thread and re-zinc. Make sure to use the correct zinc coating.

There's a guy on eBay that sells complete motor fastener kits for different engines. I haven't tried them, but it looks convenient to get all the correct fasteners in a package.

You might contact him about the period correctness of his stuff.
