Wheel Durm Cleaning

I need some advice. I am restoring a 1973 Ducati 750 GT and want to find the best way to clean and brighten the rear wheel drum, and all the rough cast aluminum components on the bike, including the engine. My first thought is to thoroughly clean with a degreaser, and then buff or use steel wool.

Any suggestions, or what has worked for you?

Cheers! Cal

Electric (corded) drill with buffing wheels and plenty of white polish and time. Tough to get cast to really shine though.

The rough castings can be cleaned with a fine wire brush or wire wool as you suggest, but it is easier if you also use some 'Wonder Wheels' too.

Small stainless brushes will do the job. Available At: Small Brushes to clean, detail and refinish cast aluminium alloy motor surfaces, restore aluminum alloy motorcycle engine and auto motor castings, engine crankcase, cylinder head. To restore motorcycle aluminum alloy, and safely remove corrosion. Fou

Thanks for the tips and techniques. I just tried some super fine steel wool with super green degreaser and I was amazed at how easily the brake drum cleaned up. I am looking for a new/clean look, not a polished look look like the engine side cases. Probably go with the steel wool and try different cleaners.

Cheers! Windy!
