I think that the answer depends on the quality of the paint. Definitely go for powder coat on both rather than cellulose paint, which will chip off as soon as you touch it. However, if you can go for two-pack paint then the finish will probably be superior to powder coat and very tough. It probably comes down to cost and how good the person applying the paint or powder coat is. I've always had frames powder coated and been very pleased with the result.

One point, before you have the frame sand blasted, block up the join where the seat hoop attaches to the frame, or you will end up with a frame full of sand!

I prefer paint over powdercoat I think the finish is better and more to the factory look.

I now prefer paint for frames as it is easier to remove from the places you forget to blank off, such as earth points, threads etc. As for wheels which are more likely to get scratched in tyre removal, it depends on how good the powdercoating company is at matching colours to get what you want.

I would powder coat the wheels because it is much tougher than paint.

Getting someone up there to paint the frame shouldn't be a problem. Yes, powder coat the wheels only when you are sure the colour is what you want. I have seen some well coated parts but the colour was just wrong. Perhaps trial something first.

Remember that powdercoat is 40X as thick as paint. On frames and large parts, it tends to look "plasticy" and thick, and can be usually spotted easily. Many don't use it on rare machines feeling that it devalues them, because it's so different in appearance than paint and powder being a contemporary coating that wasn't used originally. Others feel the durability benefits outweigh the non-originality concerns.

It's your call!

I would never put any powdercoat on a 82 SS!
Keep the value of the bike, use paint.
