$382 Roundcase Engine Rebuild

While ferreting out the papers for my 750 Sport re another post, I found an old receipt that I thought might make interesting reading.
Its a receipt from Ian Gowanloch for rebuilding the engine on my Sport. The parts list includes $114 for a new big end, $53 for a gearbox main shaft, $23 for 4 valve guides, etc. The labour was a whopping $114 for 16 hours @ $9 an hour.
I thought the Sport was brilliant when I bought it new, but after Ian had worked his magic, the Sport was absolutely amazing.
I wonder if Ian still charges $9 an hour?

I'm sure they were about $3000 when they first came out will give you $3000 and a case of beer for it.

Hey, I can remember when petrol was less than £1.00 for 4 gallons-it's over £6.00 a gallon now in the UK.

I also had trouble contacting Ian about some parts I was after. Eventually I called in at his farm on the way to an interstate rally and collected them in person. Spent a day or two there and along with viewing Ian's extensive collection of spares (drool) helped his wife build an enclosure for some baby wombats and had dinner while pigs and wombats roamed the room. A truly memorable experience.
I realise paying a personal visit may be a little difficult if you live in France.
Ian now has a very able assistant to help him handle orders so you may have better luck now.

Yeh, that sounds like a plan - I quite like the idea of building baby wombat cages ...

I'll have to prod Ian again. At least last time we got as far, "I'll get you a mailing cost" ...

What's the name of his assistant? Got an e-mail?

Ciao

Craig

Over the years, I have ordered many parts for my bevel twins, via the UK spares importers, that have come back from Ducati as 'no more stock'. However, now Ian is selling a lot of the stuff that I was trying to get back in the Eighties, so the factory had it after all. Was the storeman too lazy to go and find it, or were they reluctant to sell to foreigners, or was the stuff hidden under piles of parts?

Usually old, obsolete, slow moving parts are sold off in lots to make way for newer higher volume stuff. Much of the time the pieces are sold as scrap metal and it gets shredded or melted down and reused.Be thankful there are people like Ian that have the resources and desire to rescue this stuff from the scrappers.
