Looked at used Streetfighter: purchase question
looked at regular 2010 SF. It felt the tank is made of cheap plastics (i know i will be flamed for saying this but my yamaha r6 had a beautiful tank and metal wrapped). It also showed signs of tank expansion. Overall, the bike is hot, as expected, but small details looked/feel cheap...
Q: how easy it is to get the tank replaced by Duc/dealer (it is a 5 year warranty on the tank, right)? are there any cost/deductible involed?
Q2: the bike had 1st service (1Kmi) done and nothing else... the guy has been riding it a bit over 3 years. bike has 3000mi... anything to look for when purchasing this bike (so far i see the tank is swelling a bit and overall the bike is dirty: chain, radiators, fenders, here and there)...?

1. the dealer will replace everything damaged by the tank expansion and the tank itself. nothing out of pocket for you. and if it's as evident as you say, it should be approved with no probs.
2. it's recommended to change the belts every 2 years regardless of mileage. cheap insurance, if your belts go it's $$$

Seriously, I don't care how hot it looks, I would not consider any dirty and lack of maintenance used Ducati - period.

Not so sure I agree. If the first service was done, the oil was changed 2400 miles ago, so it would need to be changed after 3,000 and really there is no other maintenance necessary. If the bike was kept inside and the price is right, then I wouldn't be afraid. Can you take it for a test ride? The stock fueling is pretty shitty on most SFs until you get above 4,000 rpms.

correct, the bike has been kept inside (garage).
I am not afraid of dirt and dont mind cleaning it up. after negotiation, the price is below $10K (bike is 100% stock). Test ride is allowed (the seller is a very cool dude).
also, when I started the bike, at first it sounded like motor is not firing right (it was not obvious but like something is missing somewhere and you can barely notice it) but then in less than a minute/so I guess it warmed up and the motor sound was just lovely... is this the fueling "issue" pple are talking about?

dude, i dont know why would you say this. my question is not about comparing Y vs D, nor I had any question about quality of material on Duc. I just stated that some finishes felt cheap considering I was looking at a premium product (well according to what pple say that Duc is Ferrari of motorcycles).
in Yamaha defense, it is a good looking and high quality product (my R6 was). after 4 years and 10K miles it looked like new and cost coins to maintain during the years.
I am still getting a Duc b/c I want to experience the premium class in motorcycles and dont mind spending extra $$$ for it (vs a Jap bike).
So, do you mind?

sputs didnt mean to be rude, i am sure!
what he probably ment is what i was going to write to you too...
if your decision can be altered depending on the service/maintenance cost, then you are probably not up to the cost of owning a 1098 ducati...
2 ducati spark plags (from ducati dealer) cost 80$ ( Spark plug story and a bonus question... front brake brembo pads are about 300euros...(and i have bought many others but none of them was near that good...)
so imagine the 12.000km service i had, costed about 500-600 euros and not all the parts where from the ducati factory...thats probably too much for an average rider...
the thing is that neither i can afford it...its too much for me, but i loved it from first sight and i bought it!
Even if i had to work my a$$ off for 3 years plus get a loan to get it...
some thing are worth fighting for...one of them is a Ducati Streetfighter S for sure...
(even with aaaaall its issues, being a ducati and all! )

I'm no genius, but something doesn't look right here......correct me if I'm wrong please, but Ducati's warranty is exactly 2 calendar years from the warranty in-service date, making a 2010 model either very close to or already out of the warranty period unless it was purchased further into 2010 than January.
The tank may still be replaced as a good faith gesture, as others have posted in the lengthy tank-swelling thread, but I would want to have this in writing from an authorized dealer before I negotiated the purchase of the bike.
I'd also want to know how exactly much time (if any) is left on the warranty since even a few months would insure that most issues encountered with the bike would be discovered and repaired before I have to come out of pocket for everything.
