the infamous dry clutch sound
Ok ducati purist, i know this is part of the bikes sole but just have to ask. I heard one with only 800 miles with an open cover and it wasn't to loud. My only concern is i leave 5:30am in the morning and i just want to be considerate of those that are still sleeping in my neighborhood. Will the stock cover reduce the noise a lot or just a little? does it get progressively louder with mileage? Ive listened to the bike on classifieds with video of the arrow exhaust with 6k miles and it didn't seem to loud. In the past at some moto meet up i remember a guy showing up with his ducati and it was so loud you heard him approach from a block away. Was that normal or he needed to replace something. Again, Im not knocking the knocking, i was just wondering if there was to make it more subtle.

The bike is quietest in its stock form. I don't think there is anything you can do to make it even quieter. The stock cover reduces the clutch SOUND (not the "noise") a bit. The fact you hear the clutch working is an indication your bike is already quite.... too quite.

The stock clutch cover will be the quietest. I'm now using an open cover and it is louder than stock but I like the noise. As the clutch basket wears in any Ducati dry clutch it will get louder. Ducati dry clutches in the past where even louder than the newer clutches because I'm pretty sure the clutch basket was steel and this made an even louder ringing sound. Another option you could try is to get a shim kit for the stock cover. This would be the cheapest way to test the noise factor. The shim kit option might even be a little quieter than an open clutch cover.

read up in this link to some ways to make the clutch quieter. two methods listed that are supposed to work:
I hate to say it... but a quieter clutch...?
it also mentions the evr 48t clutch basket/clutch pack. that is also another option to quiet down the clutch.

This isn't too bad to me for sound. as long as it didn't get louder i may get away with it.
the one I heard was an older ducati comming down the block and it was a metallic "ting" sound and wasn't the little knocking sound i heard on the 1098 in person. Again its not a bad sound i just like to leave stealth out of my neighborhood at that hour in the morning. The 848 streetfighter wet clutch would easily fix my stealth problem, but ive already rode the 1098 and it was just the rite amount of bike for me.

The SF passes noise standards with the stock cover and stock exhaust. If you leave your bike stock and you bother your neighbors I would tell them to f--k off. I don't believe that SpeedyMoto cover you posted is any quieter than stock. What is it exactly that you want? Louder than stock? It's becoming unclear.
As I said before in my other post. Don't compare the SF with an open clutch cover to an older Ducati. The older Ducati is going to have a louder ringing sound due to differences in the clutch basket materials.
I'm personally a fan of the dry clutch and its noise. I'm sad that it's going away. I'm using a 10 spoke SpeedyMoto clutch cover on my SF and the dry clutch sounds great to me.

When the basket and plates come time for renewal, go for the ProCutting basket in hard anodized black. It is the quietest solution to the dry clutch. Tighter tolerances between the basket and the clutch pack mean less free play rattle. That an keeping a cover on it like others have said.
I've done this to both my S2R and my Hyper. I like hearing the motor. The Hyper's clutch basket was at the point of drowning out the motor.

If I leave early in the morning, I coast the bike down the drive and fire it up down in the street, then short shift until I get to the main road. It could be worse, your neighbors could live next to someone with a Harley with straight shotgun pipes.........

They talk about switching plates around in the link. How does this affect the noise output?
