S vs. Non-S ECU

before you burn me, Ive tried a dozen ways of searching for the answer...

Can a base model use an S ECU remapped for purposes of tuning?

In other words; Im looking to upgrade my exhaust. If I bought a pair of say Termi cans could I send away aN ECU from an S model to plug into my base SF?

Thanks, I also pm'd a couple of gurus on this Forum but ive yet to receive an answer.

it will work but you might get an error when the ECU looks for the DTC computer.
Don't know for sure.
But the S ECU can be flashed with the DTC turned off.

If you're talking about a bone stock slip-on ECU don't bother, they are as far out of tune as your bike will be with the stock ECU.
You'd be better off with a bazzaz or tuneboy

This was my original Plan, to get the Bazzaz...!

I know your answer from personal experience, its yes, it'll work like FlYNN says, if the DTC is enabled, on the display module, it will pull an error code, if you turn it off, or simply dont attempt to enable DTC it will work just fine, and you wont get an error.

A third 'Yes' any of the 5AM ECUs (except the IAW5AM HW103, very early and very few) can be flashed with a non 'S' calibration. While you're having that done have the closed loop operation turned off so you can tune it everywhere.

Or just get Doug to flash it for you - less expense and less hassle

One thing that Doug's flashed handled stellar was that the "stock" warm up of the bike still remains perfect. That was something that I ran out of patience with when running the microtec. On top of that, the tuning for slip-ons in my case has me satisfied. Flyn's ecu was Doug's full exhaust flash which is different.

No piggy back.
No black magic.
All goodness.

Or you could do whatever... it is your bike.
