One PBR for the fella from ChiTown!
Mind you, I am just helping another person out to see if this is do-able.
Every modern Ducati has a data logger built into the bike.
Most of us use it a few times, then toss it to the side. Such a waste of good technology. The problem with the DDA is, wtf can you do with it. Have DDA Runfile parties?
Well from looking at different solutions that included Aim's SmartyCam, there was still the issue of wanting more data from the bike. Why couldn't we tap into what was already accessible to the DDA? Well the people who make the DDA are not thinking like people who ride. There is a lot of useful data from the data channels that the DDA records. Only problem is that it's just data. How do you tie it into real life? Say you do trackdays and want to know if you are doing better lap times by taking different lines. You can't tell where you are on the track by looking at the DDA file. You need something to bring it all together.
That's when I stumbled on TrackVision.net. They take standard video from GoPro camera and marry that to standard data files from loggers that only share one thing with the video. They are recorded at the same time. After you do some laps or even a fun ride in the mountains, you take that log file and the video into a PC and TrackVision creates the dash overlay just like SmartyCam. All you have to do is find a sync point for the video and data, then lock the two together. Export out the movie and you have the same results as a SmartyCam, but at a fraction of the cost.
Most people already own a GoPro. Most newer Duc owners already own the DDA. The only thing you have to have is TrackVision software ($150) and a magical piece of software that will transcode the DDA Runfile into a CSV standardized file format.
Right now, we know it works. What remains is how the smart man who wrote the transcoder wants to make his software available. We'll see... I'm just really glad it does work. It's such a waste to have a DDA and it basically is a paper weight since it does not provide what the combination of it and TrackVision can combined. If anything moves, I'm sure you will hear about it... if not well at least you know that DDA isn't a total piece of worthless sheeeeeet.

That would be an image for illustration purposes. Take a look at the TrackVision.net sight. Those videos are shot with ANY camera. Then married to the data file in post.
If you wanted to do this with REAL stuff, a data logger and sensors would cost more than I shelled out for SmartyCam. And the issue with the stock Ducati ECU is that the data channels are not fully known, otherwise we wouldn't be having this conversation.
I am pleased with what SmartyCam can do, but it's expensive. You have to wire shit into the bike etc etc. Now if I want to get the same on my Hyper, I can take all that shit off the bike, patch up the wiring I did, re-wire it on the Hyper and I'm good to go after I empty a full magazine from the G3 rifle into my Janeane Garofalo Effigy for the frustration of doing the same stuff twice.
With the DDA, I just plug that sumbiotch in, slap a GoPro on the bike and Im ready to roll with bus fare to spare. Now the new ReplayXD camera is out, $180 for a 1080p camera that is the size of a small LED flashlight. How cool is that for the money.

There are a couple of ways to sync.
If your camera is shooting the dash, and you flash to pass (lap counter), this data is recorded on the DDA. You would also see the revs on the dash which you can match to say when you start the bike and start the DDA to record, you can blip the throttle and match the revs on the dda to your video or audio.
While it may be a non exact method, if you are close, you can always shift it until you are happy. Any point of the video can be matched to any particular point on the DDA Run file. Like if you are going thru the gears, that sequence will translate well with the audio or dash to the data on the DDA.
Once you find the sync point, you just click the LATCH check box in the TrackVision software, and no matter where you cue the video or data inside of TrackVision, the other is automatically cued to that point.
From there, you decide on what dash you want overlayed. Set the export settings for the video file. Then MAKE MOVIE. It renders the dash data onto the video, creating a new video file. So you maintain the clean video file, as well as the dash overlay file in case you want to use the clean footage for other editing.

Great idea on the lap marker. I had a complex LED with wiring idea in my head, but using the KISS principle is a much more awesome idea.
Very interested. Looking forward to more info.

Well tonight was good progress.
Got the license for TrackVision.. so at least I can output the movie file.
Spent a good bit of time on the config file in TrackVision.
Since you can use any logger basically with TV, you may have to create/modify an existing file so that the data you bring in is properly recognized.
Once that was done, it was simple to sync the video. I had the GoPro aimed at the dash, and when I hit the lap switch on the bike, I was able to park the data stream right when the high beam light came on.
I picked a generic bike gauge setup, and made it huge FFS. Export will take some time, the netbook is not known as a powerhouse of processing.
When it finishes, I'll post some link sausage.
