FWIW, I did some research and the 02-07 Monsters state to use 10W-40 in the manual. The 08-up Monsters (and other Ducatis) state to use 15W-50. I didn't hear an explanation as to why it went to 15W-50 for 2008-up. The only major change to my 696's engine is the removal of the ball bearings for the camshafts, and it now relies on oil film for lubrication and as a bearing surface. This suggests I should use a 10W-40 because it travels up to the cams faster than a thicker 20W-50, but I'm not an engine expert.
