Due for 1st oil change on my 848 advice?

I am new to Ducati so I'm in need for advice. In my Yamaha's I always used Yamalube, and the OEM filter. I am a full time mechanic. I believe in staying with the OEM filter. My question is the oil is Shell Advance Ultra 4 is something I never used before. Is this a Synthetic or not? The oil grade calls for 10w40. I want to keep my 848 forever, and want to use an oil that will be used for the rest of the bikes life. I refuse to use Royal Purple so don't mention it. I know Shell does make a great product, but finding Shell lubricants is a little tough around here. So any advice from Ducati experienced would be great.
Thanks!!!!!!!!

i'd like to comment, but i'm specifically forbidden from responding to oil related threads.

you might search "oil" here on the .ms for any number of the debates that have been launched over this topic.

beautiful bike that 848. congratulations. change the recommended service/grade oil often enough & you will never have an oil related performance issue......ever.

Good for you on coming over to a Ducati, the problem with the oil that is recommended by Ducati is I believe the specific one isn't distributed here. However, use AGIP, it's what I use in my 749R race bike, and what Mark Sutton down at DucShop has recommended to me in the past. It's had great results through race experience and applications, so in a street application it would work very well also. It's very good stuff though. OEM filter is fine though. PM me if you have any questions though.

The question I have that wasn't answered was what type of oil, petrolium or synth is in the bike for the first 1000km?

Shell Advance Ultra 4 is a full synthetic oil. Replace with a quality full synthetic oil and you'll be fine.

Here is my 2 cents, and some answers to your Q's:

Shell Advance is full synthetic oil. Full synthetic oil is what comes in Ducatis from the beginning. Now Shell Advance is not available in the states thus you can not get it. So what I did and what I would recomend is to call up your dealer and find out what oild they used in your bike from the begining. Also find out what oil weight they used as well, as it may be different from what the manual recommends as a good all around weight.

In my case my Sport Classic manual recommends 10W-40 Shell Advanced Ultra 4 Synthetic, but my dealer uses Silkolene 15W-50 full Synthetic. Why, for one, as mentioned earlier Shell is not available, and 15W-50 is what work best for my temperature region. So I use Silkolene 15W-50.

Hope this helps

Yes, it has helped. But what about these stories of motors not breaking in properly with synthetic oils? Is it just more B.S.?

I have heard about the myths of not breaking in with synthetic and have done so in the past with my other motorcycles. But after reading into the matter further there is no conclusive evidence that break in with mineral oil is better than synthetic. Ducati engineers find that synthetic oil works best in our engines from first crank so I will continue with there request.

Yes, I agree too. Is there any other subject more mythical than oil. If there ever is another newer version of the bible there will surely be a section on oil in it. Here is my next question. My bike has a dry clutch, therefore it is not affected by these high mileage additives that supposedly can make your clutch slip. So as I think I would be ok to use these oils. I was at the local store yesterday and looked at all Mobil 1 has to offer. None of the automobile oils are Jaso certified yet their motorcycle oil was. I can choose between 10 -40 or 20 -50. They claim the 20-50 is for air cool V twins. I live in a coilder climate so I was concerned about 20 -50 being too thick.
