I don't think so. It doesn't look like my original piece had that little botched area. Maybe take a look at a new bike at a dealer for comparison. It appears that it might be caused by the steering damper bracket rubbing on it. That bracket tends to flex a bit when in use and doesn't have a bunch of clearance to begin with. It might also be an indication that your tank is expanding. That's happened on mine. After the tank expanded, the bracket began to contact the Shift Tech guard. Previously, there had been good clearance.
