2008 Ducati Desmosedici RR Review

It doesn't take long to be intimidated by the outrageous Desmosedici RR. If the stratospheric $72.5K price tag doesn't get you, the menacing mechanical cacophony upon start-up will. Observers are sucker-punched straight into the gut, and the beautiful racket portends an experience unlike any production streetbike in the world.

It's quite incredible that a manufacturer has offered such a repli-racer to the public. The D16RR is literally a MotoGP bike built for the street. And not those scrawny 800cc prototype racers currently on the grids – we're talking the big-gun near-liter-sized versions. As such, the RR carries a compact 989cc V-Four engine inside a version of Ducati’s trademark tubular-steel trellis frames.

The engine itself is a jewel. It features the same bore and stroke measurements (86.0mm x 42.56mm) as those on Ducati]s 2006 racebike, the D16GP6. It uses the "Twin-Pulse" firing order in which the crankpins are offset by 70 degrees (cylinders fire at 0°, 90°, 290° and 380°) to generate what Ducati terms as "soft pulse timing."

No soft pulses are felt from the D16's saddle – this thing snorts and sprints around a racetrack like a rampaging demon, as we found out during a few lapping sessions at Willow Springs Raceway.

D16rr

Interestingly the European press are suggesting that the 1098R is closer to the Bike Troy bayliss races than the D16RR is to the 990 D16RR that Loris and co raced the year before last.. So how close to the real thing is it then?

Have noted numerous Euro reviews describing how close it is to the GP bike, despite being detuned (if it weren't it would be unrideable as many have mentioned). The reviewers, who have ridden the real GP bikes often have comments like this one from Neeves...

There’s no other way to describe the Ducati Desmosedici RR than as a MotoGP bike with lights; it really is that close to the real thing. The 200bhp motorcycle is a replica of Ducati’s Desmosedici GP6 MotoGP machine, which Loris Capirossi and Sete Gibernau rode in the 2006 World Championship and features the same chassis layout, bodywork and ‘long bang’ ..

GP bike with lights? Anyone know what the D16RR weighs in at?
The GP bike is 148Kgs I believe. Add another 40Kgs for the road version.
It does drop a few Kgs when the stock muffler comes off but still seems a little porky for a cutting edge sports bike.
Also a little disappointed with the 1098 mirrors.
It is a beautiful machine non the less.
Id love to see a D16RR up against the 1098R though.

171 kg. And when you ride it, it seems incredibly ligth, at least at low speeds, on open roads...

personally i would rather spend a 3rd of the desmo's $$ and get a 1098R as IMO it as as good a bike as the desmo, factory rated 186hp aswell.

well looking at the stats i would deffinatly go for the 1098R for street use.
seems to me to be a much better bike from the stats. but when you can say, i own a desmosedici peoples mouths will drop lmao, that alone is worth the $$$.

Moto GP

Yes no doubt a collectable, the 1098r is the real deal for the money. Please don't get me wrong on this call. As 40K is a bargin duc for a 1098r. As our ace rider steps off, wow what a legacy the 3 time Ducati World Champion has left us. Super Bike will never be the same next year. As we were so fortnutate to have Troy show us how to kick ass on a duc, will be missed.
Ducati will not repeat next year without him, darn. Perhaps a in a good way to prove just how good he is.
