The Best of MS awards. How to get this off the ground
Hi folks and site admins.
Was wondering if this site has any recognition or yearly celebration for those who make this site so great.
I was thinking I would be more then willing to kick in in a few bucks to fund an award pool. I think with as many members as we have even a few $ donation per user would fund a nice pool.
Some suggested award categories:
1) Best thread administrator
2) Best technical advisor
3) Most inovative contributor
One of my first post on the board quite some time ago was a request for help installing a carbon rear hugger on a superbike. "Gallaxy" called me long distance and walked me as a newbie through the install process. All the time racking up long distance charges on his phone.
Chuckracer (who I thought was a bit harsh when I first was on the board) turns out has given more common sense and valued knowledge and admin support then I could ever dream of contributing. He rides orange now but still keeps the Duc pond scum free :-)
DucEditor has written numerous articles that raise the bar on how to write with style and while conveying tons of information. Instant "class" to any thread he contributes too.
That it just a quick sampling of people I think make this forum great.
So, any interest in setting up some awards for the "Best of MS" ?

Thank You. I'm honored to be thought of as highly as this, to be included in something like this. But for me it's really not necessary. I'm just a janitor here, one of several. I'm just a little higher profile than some.
Ten months ago, the membership here helped me out when I was in a pinch, in a way I could never have dreamed of, the repercussions of which are still being felt today. I was shown what a great group of people this is, and my gratitude is felt daily.
It's about more than just a brand of motorcycle. This is my "home base" of internet forums - I know the names and can almost hear the voices, can recognize the patterns, the ebb and flow of a community interacting and reacting. It requires very little moderation...it just flat works and is really cool to see.
I do tend to come off as a bit harsh, and I apologize for that. It's more due to a lack of typing skills coupled with impatience. What I intend to say and how it appears on the screen often differ. It's happening right now...That's something I really need to work on and it will get better.
Anyhoo, I've been blessed with all the thanks I'll ever need, and enjoy "helping maintain the Ducati Pond".
Anyhoo, and with no further ado (or rambling):
1, Best Administrator: Scott. Without Scott, we all would be stumbling around in the darkness, lost, listening to the echos of our own voices...He always has the answers for us mods when we don't know what to do. It's always a cool answer, measured and wise. I learn from Scott all the time.
2, Best Technical Adviser: Anybody that takes the time to answer a noobies redundant question, patiently and thoroughly. That simple action does more to make the rest of us look good and make for happy new members than anything some mod can do. THAT'S the positive power of this forum.
3, Most Innovative Contributor: Metalhead. No explanation necessary!

I don't have a clue how to setup a polling thread and capture/tally votes. Also useless to figure out how to turn captured votes into an " award" . I was thinking maybe a paypal ducati MS account people could contribute a buck or two to fund those awards.
So if the idea is supported by enough folks , what is the next step ?

I think this is a great idea...
You can create a poll just by creating a new thread and at the bottom where you type your message, there is a check box for "make a poll" and then select the number of polls you want. Then hit the submit thread button and it will bring you to a page where you can type the polling stuff.
Make a few more categories... Think of some creative stuff.
Ohh and I'd keep money out of this...

I agree. Maybe the Rainman will authorize the use of the purple hippo for "Hippo" awards.

At my first "real" job, the engineers had a "Turkey of the Year Award" usually presented at the company Christmas party (the company what?). Basically it was a list of those who had done some of the most bone headed things, without getting killed, badly injured or fired at work. Honorable mentions got a lot of verbal abuse. The winner got a trophy, appropriately, of a turkey on a 7th grade wood shop base and a bottle of Wild Turkey. The trophy had be promonently displayed on the winner's desk until the next awards ceremony. Failure to display the trophy meant a round of drinks on Friday afternoon. No exceptions.
The last winner was actually a consecutive two time winner. He, a PhD scientist, had managed to set his pants on fire by placing a still lite pipe (yeah, some guys still smoked tobacco in pipes, way back then) in his pocket. The first time, he had a 2" burn spot in his tan pants and a very red face. The second time was a little more serious, as he had a couple of hundred bucks, vacation pay, in that pocket that fueled the fire. It was a nasty burn, right next to the family jewels. He was still limping and kind of PO'd at getting the award the second time. His wife was still fuming. We laughed harder the second time.
Count me in. Maybe we should re-name to Watermellon of the Year Award ....?

We could also throw in half a liter of extra virgin olive oil for the best oil question and a watermelon for the most foolish act anyone actually confesses to.
Perhaps Chuck's old goat avitar could be put to use as well.
