Desmo valve system,, Is it out dated??
When the Desmo system first came out I think it was for a good reason, however with the progression of valve, cam and spring technology the desmo system is outdated and only cost more to maintain.
Why is Ducati still using this design???

My guess would be two part. First, it does work. Second, Ducati is the only one that has it.

The motogp bikes seem to work quite well with it. Maybe not as outdated as it appears, with the modern high RPM (high friction) multi cylinders.
But the real answers are as per previous post, IMO.
Besides...it's just cool!

It works well on my SS, it even seems to work on WSB and MotoGP bikes.
Are steel trellis frames outdated as well?
You'll probably be better off with deltabox or similar when going down on watermelon.

I had a chat to Federico while he was out here in Australia for the Tourismo..
I asked that VERY same question..
He looked me in the eye and said there was only one reason. " Purely to give Internet Trolls something to bring up every 3 months "
I accepted that as gospel.

You know, I think AzThumper is on to something. I mean if the Desmo system is out of date, maybe manufacturing in Italy is too. Everyone knows you can produce items in China/Taiwan/Phillipines etc cheaper.
Maybe Ducati can save some overhead and other costs by moving to one of those places to produce non-Desmo-system bikes?
I know I would buy one.

Technology moves forward very quickly and those who stand still become history. I think this is a legitimate question. Too bad some feel the need to ridicule it or attack the poster. I suppose they have nothing intelligent to add to the discussion so they feel the need to strike back. BTW, that seems to be fairly common on this forum.
I agree that desmo is a very cool concept. It allows a twin to rev to higher rpms and therefore produce more power than it otherwise could. It would be interesting to compare other twins (SV models, VTR, etc) that use valve springs and look at their max rpm and hp although I suppose you could argue that the Japanese have not put their big R&D dollars into those engines.
There is no question that it is more costly to implement and maintain the desmo engines. Isn't that why bevel drive went away in favor of belts?
