Clutchless shifting??

I had a buddy say he only uses his clutch for first gear, not for upshifts. Is he nuts? I always clutch, ever hear of this??

'bout the same as what I do, only I clutch for downshifting (just to be specific). Lots of guys I know do that.

Not using the clutch for upshifts is ok. What happens is the power going to the main shaft in the tranny is not spinning as fast as the gears. So there is not real lashing of the gears when you shift. Now down shifting is when you rin into problems. There is a heavy load when you shift down with out the clutch. The lower gears are spinning faster than the tranny shaft. That caruses then to grind when you shift. Basically after a while of that you will end up stripping the gears out.

Yep, hardly ever use the clutch upshifting. I just back off the throttle for a mili-second and grab the upshift. Backing off unloads the trans and it goes right into the next gear. Quik shifters/power shifters, like the ones dyno jet and others sell does basically the same thing except electronically. When you move the shift lever, the quik shifter shuts off the fuel, or ignition, or a combo of both to unload the trans and allow the gear change to occur.

But like the others said this is for up-shifts only.

Up or down i've never had any problems ,, just match the revs with a slight pause as you go . The only time i really use it is at stops and starts .

shift away

shifting without clutch

quite often I'll shift without both ways, up and down. some of the downs
can be a little jerky but not often. sometimes my hand hurts a little from using the clutch, so it's a handy thing to learn, if you'll pardon the pun

Yup. Not a problem, up or down. I do use it to go 1-2, tho, as it can get kinda jerky if I'm not mindful.

clutchless here on nearly all upshifts, but mostly into 3,4,5 and 6.

Clutch all the time on downshifts.

Ive done both up/down shift w/o clutch. Some days however, I will use the clutch for every up/down shift. depends how I feel.

Downshifting you have to put downpressure on the shifter, when it matches ie: engine speed/tranny speed, it shifts by itself. However if you are going to fast, you can lock a rear tire up. Don't ask how i know this

One more for upshifts

I use the clutch on downshifts mostly, hardly at all on upshifts...
