on board video - Ducati.ms

So this was touched on before the "new beginning" and I want to know if any of you are/have run on board video. I was going to build a bracket to hold my canon elf that can hold a gig of digital video, but was more interested in a small camera mounted at the fork or helmet and recorded to a hard disk. I know there are cameras that can record to a video camera but the cost starts to rise. So lets here some ideas about affordable video!

I have a sportbikecam.com mount on my tank, its solid and holds the camera well. I have a Sony digital camera with Mpeg video, useless on the mount since there is no digital image stabiliztion. I have a old JVC C-VHS with DIS and its terrible. I know people that are running the same mount with new Sony, Panasonic and Canon digital camcorders that have DIS and the pic is outstanding. Santa failed me and didnt bring a new camcorder, ohwell.

With the new Digital cams do you want 1 ccd (chip) or 3 CCD, I have seen some of the Panasonic 3 chip's mounted on a sportbikecam.com mount and the video is incredible. Though sony doesnt have as many mid range 3 chips they have better DIS. Also do research on some camcorder websites.

I borrowed this link from South Bay Riders, not trying to steal credit from the site or the poster. Thanks Synergy, pretty cool video, probable a little too "Hollywood" for what I am trying to do! I am aware of the video mounts for the gas tank. What I was more interest in was a small lens that records to a digital media or even a digital cam-corder. But I didn't want to drop $500 or $1000 on the set up. I'am think low budget here. I did find a recording device that will take a camera input with out all the video cam-corder stuff:

The stack DVR comes real close as it can be located under the seat, But as I remember from before it was pricey. I am still looking!

I have used my Canon Elf camera mt behind the wind screen on my SS and got great results. I used rubber covered "Adel" clamps to place an aluminum strip between the fairing stays and mounted the cam above the speedo. Cool stuff!

The tripod socket is just 1/4 X20 tpi.

thats what I have is a canon elf. Maybe I will go look in my scrap pile for a piece of aluminum and build a bracket!

My setup consists of a bunch of those spy-cameras as well as an automatic switch (ebay), and finally my trusty Sony DCR-TRV27. I bought the camera 3 years ago, for $650, and it's been throught 2 lowsides and one highside. However it's still working great. I mount the spy cameras all over the bike, and even use a wireless spy-camera on my helmet. I run a remote microphone in the back of the bike (to catch the awsome sound of the exhaust), where I mount my Sony Camcorder. The whole setup cost me about $800, and it's been running great ever since.
The only problem is that the spy-cameras don't really have the resolution that I'm happy with, although I've gotten some great footage from them.

My next project is to purchase a new top of the line HDTV camcorder and some high quality Sony security cameras, and hook that up. The resolution should be between 625 lines to 1250 lines, and then I'll be able to edit it professionally and make some really nice video's.

One thing I can tell you, is that KEEP the recorder on as much as possible(you'll never know when you'll get that great clip) and keep playing around with the locations for the camera(s), as you will find out that you'll only be able to use about 1 minute of recorded film for every hour you record, IF you are lucky.

Also play around with a PC editing software (Vegas 4.0 is what I use), and start making short video's with your friends. You'll be surprised how easy this stuff is, and how nice it can come out if you spend some time with it.

I already have RAM mounting points on my duc, I ordered a camera mounting ram plate from gpscity.com, and will use that to mount my Nikon CoolPic. I also ebayed a couple more 512MB SD cards, plus with the 256 MB SD card I have I can shoot about 4 hours of MPEGS at the lowest resolution or I think about an hour at the highest resolution. I got the idea from Vivid1 on a trip we did to the east coast last summer, she had her Elf mounted that way. I'm going to experiement with a number of set ups, until I find something that is reasonable cost wise.

My setup consists of a little Mobile DVR I found on eBay...
for 229 bucks (USD)... plus a 1GB SD card...

And the best lipstick camera I ahve found to date (I've tried over ten brands!!)

Go there and check out the official Rossi camera... the 46KAM!!
Works great, has survived a highside... goes through batteries pretty fast though, so works better if you hardwire to your electrical system (good luck 916 riders!)
