Is this tire safe to drive on?
So I picked up this bike for a friend of mine and he wants me to drive it to him in DC (i'm in pittsburgh) and I'm wondering if I can even drive this to my mechanic to get fixed or should I just get it towed?
Also, I put about 40 miles on these tires getting it to my place in pittsburgh. I don't remember seeing this when i got the bike. is it somehow my fault? if you lose traction could this happen? it's pretty crazy since i have a 749 and have skidded all over the place and my tires never looked this bad.

Ha! couple weeks ago I was about the same 40 miles from home when I noticed the same on my 999R...I rode it back home but certainly with my spidey senses buzzing. I've seen monkeys riding around with the actual steel braids showing - at least you are not there. Call me yella...but I'd tow it or get something else on there.

got it. my mechanic said he saw a guy at the track with zip ties holding brake pads in, some people are crazy.
thanks for the advice. now I just don't know if I should pay for this or tell my friend i found the bike like this. he bought it online. i feel terrible about these situations.

honestly if the tire was down that far it's hardly your fault. He's gonna need to get a new tire anyway just tell him he needs to do it now - before you go any further.
Favors sometimes go like that.

+1 on this. Tires are consumables, if your friend wants you to ride it down tell him you'll only do it on fresh tires. It's a used bike anyway so new tires should be expected. If your local shop is less then 50 miles away I would think you could ride the bike there to get tires for it, as long as the roads are dry. Just take it easy knowing what you have under you.

My rule of thumb is, if I have any question about anything being safe on a motorcycle it’s repaired or replaced before it riden. Replace it.

Please, with all due respect, I'm really not trying to be an asshole, but it concerns me that you would even ask a question like this.
Ride Safely!
