Seeing as I live in Indy and have been to all 3 MotoGP events I can offer my opinion. I have sat in Ducati Island twice and have had tickets there all 3 years. Is it cool, yes. Is it a good atmosphere, yes. Is it a good place to watch the race, no. I have found two places where I like to watch the event. The first is behind the museum. There are grass humps along the outside of the track behind the museum. There is also a section of stands if you'd rather have a proper seat. They offer an excellent viewing position of a few curves, fairly close up, and there is a huge screen there to watch the action after they pass. The second place is on the outside of the track at the far north end about halfway up the grandstands. You get to see the infield straight and all of the curves on the north end. Both places can be seen on the seating chart link below. The first place I described is called "Corner 7 Terrace" right behind the museum. The grassy mounds are on the outside of the track by the lakes next to "T7", "T8", and "T9". I believe those to be simple 'general admission' tickets but you'll need to get there early to claim your spot. The second place is called the "Northwest Vista", at the far north end.

Those are the best places to watch the race, if you actually want to watch. For general atmosphere, Ducati Island is cool though. Ducati Island runs the length of "T1" and "T2" on the map above. All you can see is turn 2, 3, and 4, and frankly, you can't really see that well as they are riding away from you and there is a huge fence in your line of sight.
This year I intend to participate in the 'red snake' ride again, which is a large Ducati bike group that meets at Ducati Indianapolis early in the morning on race day and rides as a group to Ducati Island. The good of that is it is fun. The bad is you get to the track way early. As for parking I always do parking in Ducati Island. I have only actually parked 'inside' the tent area once. I won't make that mistake again. There are a million people walking around all day and you can't get out if you need to. Also, it's gravel and everyone kicks up white dust that totally coats your clean bike. You can still park at Ducati Island but park outside the tents in the extension lot of it. You can get out more easily and you won't get as dusty, and if you want people to see your bike they still will.
There are other events that happen that weekend. I suggest you attend the Ducati Dinner and stay at the central hotel that most Ducati out-of-towners stay in. It's a good atmosphere there and a nice meeting point. I get an e-mail from the guy that puts that on every year. His name is George Betzhold. If you are interested in this call (828) 837-5678 and ask for him. He can put you on his e-mail list and you'll get updates as the event approaches.
Also, swing by Ducati Indianapolis as they usually have an event or two during that weekend. Check the shop's website or join "IndyDesmo" for details. That's "www.idesmo.org". It the web forum for Ducati Owner's in Indiana, or anyone really.
