Salvage titles: Worth it?

So I got bored at work this week (Graveyards are more ative than Fed govt. buildings between Xmas and Newyears!) and stumbled across a few Vehicle salvage re-sellers like these:
Chevy Dodge Ford Salvage Repairable Trucks For Sale

QCSA Direct: Motorcycles <span style="font-size: 0.6em;">by <span class="crashedToys" style="vertical-align: bottom;" ><img src="/images/CT_LOGO_noDOTCOM.png" style="border: 0px;" /></span></span>

A quick browse of the items they have on the first (or at least the items they let you see before you pay the $20 registration fee) shows a few Ducati's in the pile. And the second has a few banged up Duc's as well.

But Im wondering if A: buying a salvage title bike is even worth it, and B: has anyone paid a "fee" to view the full listings?

Give Welcome - Salvage Direct a whirl.
They are affiliated with QCSA - could be the same company for all I know.

Salvagedirect took over www.crashedtoyz.com but the site is still up with same listings and decriptions.

IMO, you get what you pay for. They do have repo's and recovery vehicles on the site. Seems like the perfect place for a track or project bike.

Sweet BMW 750 on the site now, perfect recovery listing that I would love to bid on.

Downside, depending on your state, you may have to be a dealer to bid.

Good to know. Im looking for mainly a project bike, or to get lucky and find a wreck that still has some good parts on it. I have my old 748 frame from europe and wouldn't mind getting a track bike build going later this summer.

The issue with obtaining a savage bike would come down to the purple you would want to use it for. Track maybe yes but how safe are major parts that would go onto the bike, for a regular everyday bike inwould never get into a salvage type situation. There's simply no resell value that comes with that or even a high demand. Maybe maybe not..

I got burned buying a salvaged 2002 900SS over the internet at a place. They said the bike was pretty much ok and only had to replace the front wheel to make it rollable...Rashed up fairings, broken mirror and rearsets aside. What they didn't tell me was the frame was bent by the steering stem, and the motor was cracked where the mounting bolt goes through...unnoticeable in the pictures.

I unloaded it for my pit bike and saw the bike several months later with a new frame and thousands of dollars thrown at it at Ducati Omaha.

Buyer beware, better to see the potential project up close to see what kind of shape it really is in. The theory is sound to make a track weapon out of a salvaged bike.

If you're planning to put a salvaged bike on the road, check with your insurance company first too. Some (many, most?) won't insure a salvaged vehicle.

As Sam pointed out hidden damage is a problem. I'd steer clear, there are plenty of well depreciated Ducatis on the market.
