Help with project please
Hello my name is Manuel and I live in Spain. I am currently studying Mechanical Engineering and with luck I will have finished by next year. For our last year, we are asked to do a project to show what we have learnt and are capable of, and I obviously decided to do something related to motorcycles.
I have finally settled on the idea of designing my own chassis. I already have an idea and for the next couple of months I will do all the numbers and plans I need, so that this Summer I can go to Todd's Cycle, in Huntington beach, to physically do the chassis and all the parts I need. I called a couple of places and he was really nice and understanding and offered to help me out with the build.
The only way to get the appropiate funding was to give the project to my university, so that they give me around 7.000$, but in exchange the project stays in the university.
I obvioulsy want a Ducati engine for this, and I wanted to ask you which engine you recommend me and exactly what parts do I need to get from eBay or similar to have a ready to run engine. I am going to buy the parts I need through eBay or whatever and have them shipped over to Todd's Cycle. After I finish building everything this Summer I will then ship it back to Spain. I was thinking on a air cooled engine, because its simpler, but im really open to anything that doesn't take up more than 3.000$ with everything needed to run.
Thank you very much

Hi Manuel,
I would personally pick up a crashed bike with heavy front-end or cosmetic damage, that would guarentee you have all the running gear for the motor as well.
An aircooled motor would be my first choice, better looking & no faff with radiators or hoses etc? Think SS, Monster whathaveyou?

This reply makes a lot of sense to me, Manuel.
You would have all the electric parts and maybe brakes, wheels, etc.
You should take lots of pictures before you start tearing the bike down, so you can refer back to them. It's easy to forget how something went together after only a few hours, after weeks it would be very tough I think.
Keep us updated!

though long distance I'd check the wrecking yards in Cali near where you plan to do your work. Save on shipping parts around. There should be a motorcycle salvage yard nearby. Good luck.

One of our sponsors, Boulder Motorsports, has a number of engines on a shelf. Perhaps you could contact them. They also may be a good source for knowledge and encouragement. Brian is good people.
