Non-Ducati plastic tank question

I went to the bike show in LA/Long Beach today. Seemed like the 1199 was the hit of the show. There were certainly more people crowded around that than anything else in the convention hall.

But I also noticed that Ducati is not alone in having plastic tanks. Probably half the bikes out there are plastic-tanked.

So is Ducati alone in these plastic tank expansion issues? What's different about the Japanese/other Italian/etc manufacturers that their tanks aren't having similar problems?

My KTM and Triumph both have plastic tanks and no issues, in fact never heard of KTM or Triumph owner complaining about this issue.

My PT guy had to park his Aprilia because tank expanded and the fuel pump popped out, shower of gas everywhere! Got a Tuono in the shop with a tank expanded enough that it does not fit anymore.

I'd say from my limited experience it seems the Italian plastic tanks are the only ones having a problem.

My 07 BMW GS has a plastic tank and I have not read about any tank problems. Also a lot of cars have plastic tanks without problems.

Probably every bike with a tank that came out of Acerbis factory has the same issue or will eventually.

Maybe Acerbis isn't a supplier to them as I have not heard of any such stories either. That or it's how they're mounted. Lucky for me, my Aprilia has a metal tank so my bikes might actually be problem free from the ethanol sitch.

Man would I love to see the manufacturers dump Acerbis as a supplier.

Here's a thread in the Orange Crush section of ADV Rider, the section for KTM LC8's:

Growing tanks: ethanol? - ADVrider

Check the last post.

Some bikes also have plastic tank covers. The tank itself is underneath and made of metal.

They will manufacture to their customers specifications, no more, no less.
