Made a mistake…removed emission sticker.
As stated….Removed emissions sticker. 2010 1198s….Calif DMV also wants me to remove the lower fairing so they can see the engine number….Always fun bringing tools to the DMV…DNA sent me a letter stating I was compliant. Hope that works…No dealer has access to those stickers…Only the factory
Don't make the mistake I did.

Not sure. Bought it new in AZ…DNA said Calif is a stickler. Im thinking Calif is the hardest in the 50 states….We do surprise emission checks on the side of the road. Yep. Like a DUI check. They put you right up on a mobile lift. Crazy...

I think the reason for the spot checking was more for the import car crowd. Not Motorcycles…Looking for race only installs..no cat convertors..things of that nature.

Well, I've lived in N. CA for 13 or 14 years now?
I have NEVER seen or heard of anyone getting stopped for an emissions test.
How is that even possible when there is NO scheduled smog inspection test requirement on a motorcycle? I'm not disputing that you've seen or heard or know about a case, but come on...I am guessing that we are talking few and far between here. Like I said, never heard about it. There was a guy who got stopped a few months ago and was ticketed for not having his blinkers spaced far enough apart. The fact is, that cop was being a jerk and was knit-picking. He was throwing his weight around like a small percentage of LEOs often do when they've had a bad day and didn't have the dog to kick.
As for the DMV, yes, they want to see the sticker that says it meets CA emissions requirements. Yes, it's a PITA because you have to take the tank off to show it to them. You also have to allow them to see the engine number and the VIN number on the frame. That's ONLY if the bike is brought into the state with less than 7500 miles on it.
Realistically, even though I complained about having to do it when I registered my bike, it's not really that big of a deal when you consider that we ride year round here. And the fact that in N. CA we are fortunate to have hundreds of miles of twisty roads to ride.

Born and raised in California. Lived here for 46 years. I've owned about 45 bikes. I have NEVER had an issue like that. I usually take all the stickers off.

Guys, the issue is with importing a bike (w/ less than 7,5k mi.) into our state that requires proof (usually visual) that it is 50 state compliant at time of registration. If the bike is registered and titled as a CA bike then I can't see how they would/could demand proof that it was.
OP: was your bike still wearing AZ plates when they cited you (maybe they didn't, it's not clear by what you've told us)?
