I ask my friends of Ducati.ms to help with my next bike
So here is the deal. I currently ride a 2009 Multistrada. That bike is not going anywhere and I plan on keeping it for a long time. My wife and I were discussing bikes and I told her that I would love to have more than 1 bike someday. Bikes of a different class type thing. She said she could see that and said I can own 3 bikes as long as we don't have loans on them, or a loan on just one.
So here is the dilemma. The two bikes I would add would be a sport bike or a adventure touring bike. 2 years ago I sold my baby. A 749S that I loved and miss to this day and I keep in touch with the current owner who said he would sell it back to me summer 2012. The other bike I would add would be the BMW f800gs. I want to ride to Alaska and do a lot of adventure touring type stuff and I like to ride for longer distances when I do go out. So now its either buy the 749s and wait on the 800gs for a few more years or get the 800gs and then get a newer sport bike after that when I can.
Sophia...my old 749s
or this...with full on nobbies!
help! and thanks..

why have to adventure bikes? That is, the Multistrada and a 800GS??
Go the 749! If not your old one, then the one that Galaxy is selling looks pretty good!

Being an avid F650 rider, I can certainly see the appeal of the GS..
IŽcurrentlty have my 916SPS and my F650. The F650 is being upgraded to a K1300GT next summer.. I looked at the R1200GS, but decided against the adventure bike because the SO likes the pillon rather then riding herself.
But since you have the Multistrada.. IŽd have to say sportsbike, since NOTHING puts a smile on my face like the crispness of the SPS. I had a 748SP before i got the SPS and that is a bike IŽd still like to own again. Gearbox like a racebike and very nicely set up.

Sportsbike.

The 749S is obviously special to you (and I can see why). Personally I would reacquire that one. Sorta depends on how imminent this Alaskan adventure is, I guess.

Hi Joe, I think the answer lies in what type of riding you would do more of, or enjoy most. You state what your wants are (Alaska) and preferences (longer distances when you go out), neither of which really match up with a superbike. Your Multistrada is part sport bike and part tourer, great for the type of riding you do. It seems to have treated you well (ex-tire incident) on your last long trip, and could most definitely get you to Alaska although it probably wouldn't be my first choice for doing so. If long distances (on and off road) are truly your preferences then my vote would be for the GS (or similar). The only reason I didn't suggest the superbike is because I feel you didn't give us enough reasons to do so (outside of time and familiarity).
If you feel like the Multi will get you to most all of your longer distance destinations AND you want to incorporate a truly different class motorcycle/type of riding into the mix, then buy back your beloved 749s. If not, stick with Multi as your only ride until you're able to acquire the other.
My two bits
Take care,

All good thoughts everyone. Thanks a bunch!
The reason for the 749s is mainly because I miss that bike and the love I put into it! Haha. Its a great bike to ride and it would fit the out for a ride by myself with no real destination in mind through the Colorado canyons.
I was thinking the multi would serve the longer distance and 2up riding and the 749s would serve the quicker pace rides and maybe an occasional track day. The multi wont see any real offroad use so the 800gs will serve that purpose with full nobbies. Colorado passes and the trip to Alaska. The trip to alaska might have to wait a bit due to my new career.
I just dont know...both bikes have their pluses and both bikes serve a specific purpose very different from each other.

Joe... For Colorado, with 90% of road miles unpaved, for exploring amazing places in the Rockies, I lean towards the F800GS. These are the rides remembered.

so wise you are grasshopper. Thanks for the input! I just wish Yamaha would bring over the Tenere and leave the super tenere for over seas!

Well the guy who I sold the 749s too called and asked me if I would detail it for it before the winter. So I asked him if I could take it for a ride to bring back some memories. He was ok with that so after I detailed it I took it out and spent some time on it.
This might be heaven....
I did about 100 miles or so and this is what I discovered...
- The bike still feels great after 3 years of not riding it
- I forgot how loud this bike is
- I forgot how uncomfortable this bike is
Over all the bike is still as amazing as it was 3 years ago, however I am not 100% sure how much I would ride it. The multi rips the canyons just as fast and yet its 10X more comfortable. I think it showed me that the F800GS will odds are be my next bike, and I will pick this baby back up a few years after that.
