cheap accurate belt tensioning.

After a few weeks of testing and two computer viruses. i have found a reliable way to test and adjust the belt tension by frequency. All you need is an android smart phone. The app to download is gStrings v1.0.9 from cohortor.org. There is a free version of the app or you can pay $2 and not have commercials. Instructions are available on the cohortor site and other than mic adjustments that are clearly spelled out I did nothing with the program. I tried 7 different programs and apps and this was the easiest to use and after testing turns out to be very accurate. I tested this app on a Motorola and two LG smart phones and saw no change in accuracy. I tested the app on my phone with a calibrated frequency generator and it was accurate to +/- 1.6hz in the required range. Then I compared my phone to others and got the same readings.

I know not everyone has a smart phone but hopefully you have a friend with one that you can use.

That sounds awesome. But I don't think my girlfriend would believe me if I told her the app on my phone called "gStrings" is for setting belt tension on my Ducati.

What do the belts need to be tuned at?

Used belts should be around 85 hz, new should be around 110 hz, ± 2 hz. on an ambient temperature engine. They would be "plucked' between the common drive pulley and the idler, the slack side of the belt. The belts spin counter-clockwise.

also cylinder being checked should be at TDC compression stroke. my mechanic said latest specs were 90hz +/- 5 used and 110hz +5-10 new. the belts on my multi were 115 new.
