Is it bad to run out of gas?

So I am getting curious just how far I can go on a tank of gas. Today I did 232.8 miles with 5 of those the gas light was on. It took 4.3 gallons of gas but the tank on my multi is 5.3 gallons. I usually fill up at 210 miles and it takes about 3.9-4.1 gallons of gas.

I want to pack a bottle of gas and just ride till I run out so I can see how far I can get on a tank. lol

Out of gas ?

Great reminder. I have wanted to try that experiment for some time. All it would take is a half gallon of gas or so in a carefully sealed container. The electric fuel pump should allow you to fire the bike right back up. Just don't try that with a diesel motorcycle or diesel anything. It is kind of a bitch to bleed the lines and it can be messy too.

No, it's not bad to run out of gas with EFI if you have some with you, just make sure what you have will get you to a gas station.

Probably wouldn't be an issue, though I wouldn't count on getting the same performance consistently down the road without some sort of safety net. At five gallons capacity, and a three mpg difference due to spirited riding...well, you get the idea

if you do it a lot you should step up your fuel filter maint interval. i do it with all my vehicles just so i can find out how far i can go. the hyper with the big tank will go 75 miles on the light but with the small tank it would only go 32.

It's a good idea to know how far the bike will go once the low fuel warning light comes on. However, I've always heard that it's not a good idea to run the fuel pump dry. It's that gasoline that lubricates the pump. Too long without lubrication and . . .pffhhht . . . there goes the pump!

Why the exercise? You figure the actual amount of gas held by the tank is probably pretty close to what Ducati prints in the owner's manual, right? Then you fill up the tank to max capacity. Reset the trip meter. Ride around 'til the gas light winks on. Then immediately go fill up. See how many gallons you need to get back to a full tank. Divide the number of miles you've traveled by that amount. That's your mpg. And you can also figure out how many gallons were left in the tank when the light came on. Then guesstimate how many miles that allows 'til you're traveling on foot. Sounds like you've already got all the numbers to do the calculations.

Kramer did that so it couldn't be too smart to run it dry, depends how much shit lives in the bottom of your tank
