Tank bag question
Ok all, so in the morning, I have to take a lot of gear with me to work. I've been taking an Icon MilSpec backpack with me as it meets the requirements to get everything on post, but (amazingly enough) it's not big enough for everything I need to bring in to work daily. So I've been exploring my options. I've looked at a tail bag, but I doubt it'll fit properly when used in conjunction with my backpack.
There's always the option of saddlebags. but I have three problems with that. 1. With my pipes under my tail, I'm concerned that it'll melt the nylon on the saddlebags. 2. I'm scared that it'll scratch the paint. 3. It's an 848, and saddlebags will look dumb (hey it's the truth).
That leaves a tankbag. And here's my issue with that. I've done the research on them; everything I've read points to a magnetic tankbag. But my 848 is the pearl white (with metallic flake, if I'm not mistaken). I've read that the magnets will actually pull the flake to the surface and jack up the paint job. Has anyone experienced this? What can I do to avoid this? Are there any other options? What's everyone else using? Thanks in advance!

..."I've read that the magnets will actually pull the flake to the surface and jack up the paint job."
That would be one world class magnet to pull metal flakes up through a dry finished paint surface...where'd you read this?
I use a Ducati tankbag on my 999 and always being careful to set it on the tank and not move it around on the painted surface, find that it works very well. Of course there are no metal flakes in the paint...

Tank bag question
I have a Rapid Transit tank bag "reckon 19L" I believe. Nice size and quality. Mine has mounting straps instead of magnets, I prefer it...seems more secure at speed. The tank on your 848 is plastic instead of metal so a magnetic bag isn't an option for you. Look at Rapid Transit and Cortech bags, good quality and reasonably priced.

I have done some research and experimenting this year sicen I use my 748 on long camping trips, so here are few options
Bailey messenger bag, was using the "Super Pro" (pic below) but just got a "digital Super Pro", the difference is the sewn in soft sleeve for the laptop.
Tank bag (pic below) magnetic Marsee, great quality but it did scratch up the pint after 3000+ miles
Also I got a Bags Connection tail bag by SW Motech (pic below with an optional tent roll) big volume, hangs over the sides and straps right against my CF Akra pipes, have not melted yet. Draw back is that it's not pretty, also gouged up the paint, not that I care, cause if I did would have used the clear film provided to protect the paint.
If I was to get another tank bag, would suggest the SW Motech tank bag, they have this quick release mounting system that bolts to your gas cap and the bag just sits above the tank, does not touch the paint at all!
TwistedThrottle.com : ...by Brand - Bags-Connection - Tankbags (with QUICK-LOCK gascap base) -
Twisted Throttle has it all and they are awesome to deal with

I shared your concern with my Oxford Humpback tankbag/Kawasaki ZZ-R1200combination.
The Oxford stuck like a cougar to a commodities trader, and over the course of nine years, never disturbed a metallic flake.

Isn't the 848 tank plastic?

I use a tank bag a lot on my ST3s. It hasn't sucked the red out of the paint yet, but this last trip a small bit of grit got on the magnet and it scratched the hell out of my tank.

I've had that happen a few time but so far I've been able to polish it out.
But you know what? I came back from that same ride and in the 1000 miles I rode while there I got more damn rock chips in my paint than I have in the previous 22000 miles! I guess that's why they call it the "rocky" mountains.
Oh yea, I keep a wet cloth in a zip lock bag in my tank bag. When I fill up with gas I wipe the tank off before putting the bag back on. Not every time but if it looks dusty or dirty.
AND, if you have magnets strong enough to suck the metal flake out of the paint I hope you don't want kids!

My used ST3 came with a Luggage Locker tank bag. This unit attaches to a ring that sits on top of the gas cap. No contact with the paint at all. While it's not that big...it is a neat idea.

I have the Ducati tank bag for my 1198S, and it works great. The leather cover fits over the tank and the bag snaps on to that; very secure. Hasn't scratched the paint at all, yet. Pretty decent capacity too, and doesn't look terrible on the bike.
