Engine conversion: "legal" issues? - Ducati.ms

Was talking with a friend of mine about a 748 I saw here that had a 999 engine and mentioned that I'd have liked to bring something like the back with me or even get a project like that going in the future.

Her response was that, sure, it'd be cool to have/do but its essentially an illegal modification to the bike and that I'd have issues either getting it into the country or even simply registering it.

Another friend of mine said it wasn't a big deal as most Transport officials never really look under the hood and take the frame number as gospel.

So Im curious to know from those who have done the mod or those who know about this stuff in general, what, if any, issues you have come across with getting that type of thing on the road.

Ive done that, and not only was it simple to get done and registered. but insurance was by vin# so it cost less to insure. (never had anyone ask or question anything)

Dont know how it is in Italy, Ive only done this in the states. I know when we lived in Germany the DMV was hell and inspection was through.

HA! Italy is a bit of a joke... unless the inspector is having a real bad day and seems to think you are to blame. Then they'll do everything in their power to make you suffer... that almost never happens though. Too many other things take priority...like coffee and checking out the ladies... and talking on the phone... and eating... and...well you get the idea.

But I hear ya on Germany....

Although I loved Berlin, I think after living in Italy

it would be tough living in Germany to say the least!
