Canon SX20 is
Has anyone got any experience or advice on this camera, I am looking for a good allrounder with good zoom, as anything thats good is always far away it seems.
If you have a better suggestion, feel free to advise.
I don't want a Digital SLR only because of the bulk & cost of different lenses.
A compact ultra zoom will suit me best, I think!

Cripes it will be replaced by a new model as soon as you buy it....
I like Canon cause they are sort of easy to operate.
The more you know the more there is to know...
Isn't the technology pretty much there for all the manufacturers to apply?
Sorry I was no help...

The SX30 IS was just announced. I don’t know. It’s probably an excellent camera, but if you're not interested in the bulk of a DSLR, then I think I'd look at Canon's G series. The SX looks to be only a littler smaller than a Rebel. The G series are very good and they just came out with the new G12.

Great advice, thanks.
The SX30 has 35 x zoom @14 megapixel.
Sounds like just the ticket, just got to save up the 500 bucks or whack it on visa.

Sounds like an interesting camera. I had no idea what 35X translated to in real terms, so I looked it up for this model. Pretty impressive. An optical zoom with a equivalent field of view of 24mm to 840mm referenced to what you would see if using a 35mm format camera with lenses in those focal lengths. Good thing it has IS!

Check this web site - it is a mine of info, particularly Canon and Nikon. KenRockwell.com
I bought the Nikon D40 and everything he writes is true. I went Nikon as i already had a very good lens from my SLR.
The site also pointed me in the right direction on NOT buying another lens nor a wizz bang flash when the simple one would do.
Some of my pics are in the PI GP thread near this one. All taken with the D40 on manual focus 80-200 ED Nikon lens.
The beauty of a DLSR is that when funds permit, you can add a different lens. Bundled lens are usually pretty good. The D40 is very lightweight as well, but I think it has been superseded, but you can still find them.

Hi Punch,
I used to live in Umina Beach 25 years ago, rode a RD250 & then RZ350 back then.
I ended up buying a Canon SX30, it has 35 x zoom.
I had my first prctice with it at PI MOTO GP, with mixed results.
I was abit dissapointed with coarse pixelation with some shots, but certainly would blame myself before blaming the camera. I need to learn its strengths and play to that. I know it can't take the same quality of photo as an SLR with the same lens magnification, so I am still learning about it, but otherwise happy. Battery life is proving to be exceptional, better than bloody AA's
Cheers, I will check out your photo's,
Craig

I'll just say this... Getting credible, unbiased, information regarding anything photographic from that site is like going to the National Enquirer for your daily news.
I'd list some sites that are a better choice, but the truth is there are too many to list.
CB4625, glad you’re getting to know your camera. The issues you may have with the pixilation are really just the result of dealing with the physically smaller sensor size in most P&S cameras. Regardless of how many MPs the manufacturer says it has, you're still dealing with a sensor the size of a pinky fingernail. Think back to the days of film. Medium and large format could be enlarged much better than 35MM before IQ suffered, and likewise 35MM was better, than say, the infamous Kodak disk with the very small piece of film they had to work with. Learn to work within the camera's limitations, and you will be very happy.
