Finally bought a point and shoot camera

In preparation to entering the world of sport touring, I ordered a Canon SD790IS digital ELPH camera. This started over a year ago when Duceditor posted a recommendation for a Canon SD 870IS digital ELPH. The whole ELPH line gets a little confusing and I know new models come out frequently. I pulled the trigger because I want to record events more and do so with a decent and compact camera. This particular one has 10 megapixels, 3x zoom, 3" pure color LCD display and a host of other features. On top of that I only paid $134 through 86th St Photo and Video.

I just know I'll be happy with it and look forward to posting the pictures on this website. Thanks Duceditor for the initial recommendation.

Really man! Post some pics! I'm in the same boat as you. Just getting started. You don't have to be a pro, just shoot what interests you.

Let's see some pics!

I would but they ran out of stock

This isn't starting off well. 86th st Photo emailed me yesterday to advised they don't have the camera in stock and don't expect another one for a month (a month?). I promptly can-celled the order, that was after them also telling me 3 days ago the battery I ordered would
not fit the camera eventhough it was advertised to do so. They cancelled that part of the order.

Today I re-ordered at a higher price and I paid for faster shipping too from a different vendor of course. Lesson to the wise, I picked the cheapest vendor on Amazon.com which was 86th St photo.

B&H Photo or directly from Amazon (not a vendor selling on Amazon) seems to have always been good for me. You will love the Canon, I have taken thousands of photos with them.

B&H Photo is the only place I will buy online and I don't even bother to check for lower prices elsewhere. I'm sure there are others, but B&H is great. They ship the same or next day, always.

Can you be more specific on your experience with the G10? I've been reading many pros/cons on that camera. My only concern would be low light photos...like indoor at a party or something like that. From what I have read, the camera takes excellent photos in areas that are well lit. Thanks!

... on the "G" Series Canon

I have been using the Canon's exclusively for years. My job keeps me in the northern Canadian bush, where the point and shoot rules (helicopters, quads and sleds). I went through 3 Powershots in 4 years; and now have the G7 (2 years now - the longest ever!). My son, who works with me has the G9. The G series are incredible! Best P&S I have ever used. Low light performance, I find to be quite good. Many accessories are available: Mine is tarted up with handles, telephoto and wide angle lenses.

It's not as good a camera as a Rebel SLR, but I love the G series and wouldn't hesitate to get another.

PS: for offroad, dusty stuff, I have an old Pentax Optio S5i that just won't quit.
