I work at the facility next door to where all the orbitors were built in California. The last shuttle to come through the facility for refurb was Columbia. I had a chance to arrange a tour of the place for my kid's science class while Columbia was there. I hope those few kids that saw it up close realize they were some of the last to see it before its accident. Whether you're an aviation or space nut or not, to have seen it up close is simply amazing. I've had the privilage to see three landings at Edwards and hope one day to see a launch before all the orbitors are retired. When they do make a landing out here we sometimes get to see it riding the 747 on its return to Florida. That, too, is quite a site to see.

Age, cost to launch and maintain are some of the main reasons the shuttle fleet is scheduled for retirement. There's a new vehicle in devolpment, will ride on the top of a rocket similar to the old Mercury and Gemini projects. Going back to the moon is what George W. said we'd be doing.
