Photo/Camera Nuts...Need Camera Help!

Gotta get the wife a camera for her birthday and need help picking one out. I know which kind she wants but I need assistance picking out the best model.

Want to get a Cannon ELPH camera. So, if someone is bored and doesn't mind helping out, I'd greatly appreciate it if you could go check out

at your convenience. Take a look at the ELPH's and pick one out for me! We are NOT photographers, and have no special request, situations, or any particular type of photo's planned. Just looking for a great, multi purpose, all around general use camera. Cost between those is not a factor so don't let that influence your decision...just an opinion on which one 'overall' is best all arounder after considering all the features!!

Not to skew your decision, but I will tell you a photographer buddy of mine picked the SD790 IS as his favorite meeting my requirements.

The two key factors that should help you decide are:
1) Do you want/need a viewfinder? Or is a larger display screen adequate or more useful to you?

The only advantage to the finder, in my experience, is that the screen can theoretically be a bit hard to see in very bright, direct, sunlight. Having used a screen-only 870 during a recent Caribbean vacation I found I never missed the finder.

2) Do you prefer a bit more tele extension or a wider lens?

Most point and shoot cameras start their zoom range at about 35mm (film camera equivalent). This is largely because of ease of design and lower cost of manufacture. Ads make this seem an advantage. In my experience the availability of a wider setting (28mm equiv) is actually far more useful in most situations.
I thus recommend the Elph 870. To me it has everything.

(Note: I've been a pro imager for nearly 40 years and own many fine cameras and camera systems. When I travel these days I only take the Elph.)

My sister, who wanted a camera with "less crap the better" has the 770 and takes stunning pictures with it!

In fact, my Dad is selling his Canon G4 and I'm probably selling my Nikon D50 to get one. Awesome camera!

I have been using a 770IS for quite some time and it has been a great camera. Someone recently dropped it while borrowing it so I will probably get the 870IS or 880IS as a replacement. I would think either one will serve you well.
